Up until now, Elizabeth has been blessed with a fully-stocked closet of hand-me-downs from our neighbors in Chicago. But this spring, for the first time, I’m having to actually buy my daughter clothes! It’s still mostly cold out, but my nesting instincts are telling me that I need to have some warm weather clothes in hand before the baby comes. The local consignment sales where I found Tommy’s winter clothes are scheduled right around my duedate, so while I’ll go if I’m still pregnant, I didn’t want to depend on them for all of Elizabeth’s summer wardrobe. Recently I joined thredup, a website where parents can trade gently used clothing and “shop” by size, season, brand names, etc. I traded some outgrown clothes that we won’t be needing in CA, and with my credit, I got a box of 24 mo/2T summer clothes for Elizabeth for just over $5:
Both kids were super excited about the new clothes! Elizabeth wanted to try them all on right away, and fortunately, there was one long-sleeved shirt in the box that she can wear now though she has to wait for warm weather to wear the others.
And here she is in her new shirt, watching Tommy build a block airport…
Next up: trying my hand at sewing some sundresses…stay tuned!

I am in the same situation (actually having to buy clothes for my daughter-we have been blessed with gifts and seconds up until now). I have a quick question, I am kind of confused on sizes. My understanding was that size 24 months was 18-24 months. Am I wrong? The 24 month and 2T stuff fit Christina now (with the typical variety depending on brand), but I’m not sure whether to get 2T or 3T size for summer stuff. She turns 2 June 3rd, and is definately big (95th for height and weight). Any advice? Thanks, Alison
Yep, our 24 month stuff is the same as 18-24 month. Elizabeth is in all 2T tops right now but still fine with 18-24 month pants (some we still have to roll up!), so I’m looking at getting her mostly 2T clothes and 24 month skirts/shorts if they run big. I feel like summer stuff is a bit more flexible because you don’t have to worry if the sleeves or legs are reaching all the way to the wrists or ankles!=) With Tommy, I felt like there was a pretty big jump from 2T to 3T, and he stayed in 2T for almost a year, so I’d say unless Christina seems to be about to grow out of her 2T stuff, she’ll probably be wearing 2T into the summer. But I have a friend here who bought her 27 month old daughter 4T stuff for the summer because her torso is so long and she doesn’t want to see belly peeking out! I think it probably depends on the brand–Walmart/Circo/Garanamals seem to run smaller (I think that’s what my friend was buying) while most of our handmedowns have been Gymboree/Gap/Children’s Place which seem to run bigger. (That’s partly why I always buy used–if they grow out of the clothes too fast, I don’t feel nearly as bad as if it was a brand new outfit!)
