Susanna, in Manual

So yesterday afternoon I tried out some of the things Bethany had shown me about going manual on my camera and shooting in Av mode…

First, here’s one in auto for comparison.

There here’s when I went off the green auto square (well, skipping about 50 pictures that were blurry while I played with the settings).

I did a quick auto fix to all four of these in picnik, so they’re equally edited.  I like that I was able to capture the natural light on her face and didn’t have to use my flash (as I apparently did the in the first, judging by the shadow).  The colors are more realistic than in auto, but I obviously need to work more at sharpening and figuring out the best settings for this room.  Bethany also recommended another lens, so that’s another thing to think about down the line.  Scary and fun!

Nice!! I am going to have to try that mode. I also had someone recommend a different lens. Why do they have to be so expensive??

I’m just back from vacation today and catching up on blogs. These pictures in AV mode turned out beautifully!! The colors are so warm and true to life. And the subject, of course, is a perfect bit of sweetness; what a smile!
I did a little research on Canon lenses (I’m more familiar with Nikon). Seems like the Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II Autofocus Lens is a great option–good clarity and bokeh, but the cost won’t break the bank. I’m also looking at a 50mm prime lens for my camera and someone recommended renting the one I’m looking at for a day from a local camera shop to see if I really like it.

Wow, renting is a great idea that I didn’t even know you could do! I need to find a camera shop in the area and see if that sort of thing would be an option…
