Our Current Playlist

We’ve been on the search for good (preferably ESV) scripture memory music for some time now, and here’s what we’re listening to these days…

The Seeds Family Worship CDs are great, upbeat, noncheesy albums with the kinds of verses we’d like to have memorized.  The first several are NIV, but they’ve now switched over to ESV.  We love listening to them in the car.  When I thought I was miscarrying Susanna back in fall of 2010, the song that just happened to be playing on my way to get an ultrasound was Philippians 1:6, and I’ve come to think of it as a special promise for Susanna’s life–“being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ.”  After seeing her little heart still beating, I drove home listening to 2 Corinthians 5:17–“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.  The old has gone, the new has come.”  Good stuff.

Children Desiring God has a couple of the song CDs that correspond with their Fighter Verses program.  They’re not necessarily geared toward children, but my kids still listen to them, especially the tracks with kids singing.  I picked them up before our cross-country trek, and while the catchiness of the songs varies, they’ve worked really well at getting some of those scriptures stuck in our heads.  The other day, I overheard Tommy singing Proverbs 3:11-12 (“My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of His reproof.  For the Lord reproves Him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.”)   I did not teach him that.  Pretty cool, huh?

And along the lines of (non-scripture) memorization, the kids are also obsessed with the Veggie Tales CDs that they got in their Chick-fil-a kid’s meals a while back.  I’ve relegated them to bedtime, because honestly, I couldn’t take much more during waking hours.  Tommy’s word for word recitation of the stories and songs is enough for me.  =)

I’m going to look into those first two CDS. It is amazing how much Scripture feeds our souls, in the many factual situations in which we find ourselves. A lamp unto our feet indeed!

As for the Veggie Tales CDs, I can commiserate. I picked a couple up out of the library this summer and it became “Veggie Tales! I need Veggie Tales” all day long. I’ve limited them to play times in the morning. There are funny bits that make me laugh, but still…
