Shedd Aquarium

So much to catch up on from the weekend, but I have a busy week with a baby shower, Tommy’s birthday, and getting ready to go to MO, so I’ll have to parcel out everything in shortish posts.

Derek got home at 11:30 pm Friday–earlier than I was expecting, actually–and Tommy welcomed him home bright and early on Saturday.  I’d gotten a free library pass to the aquarium, so I was excited about a family outing in the morning.  Well, after the $17 parking and standing in line to get in for 45 minutes, we finally got inside and realized it’s the lamest aquarium we’ve ever been to.  We’re not big animal people, but we’ve been to awesome aquariums in Boston, Baltimore, and even Spain, and this one didn’t even have a very large tank with big animals swimming around.  There was a dinky central one-story tank with some manta rays and mid-sized fish, but since the other million inhabitants of Chicago were all there, too, we didn’t get very close.  The side galleries were generally too high up for Tommy to stand and look in on, except the Amazon river basin ones where Tommy watched a guy in a scuba suit cleaning the tank for about 20 minutes.  Tommy enjoyed running around the crowds, but it was so busy that that became too stressful for us, and we left after half an hour.  I was so disappointed that I cried on the way home, so we cheered ourselves up by stopping at Panera for lunch before both boys took a nap.  And that was our grand day out.  (Adding insult to injury, I forgot to take the pass back until after the library closed, and it’s closed on Sundays and on President’s Day today, so I’ll be paying a hefty late fee tomorrow for our “free” morning out.  Grrrrr….)

I did get a few pictures in the 5 minutes that Tommy was actually looking at fish.:

That’s a pretty cool jacket! Where (or from whom) did Tommy get it?
