This actually happened a couple weeks ago, but I never got around to posting the pictures. This year, we did a real Christmas ornament-making extravaganza. The kids love messy art projects, so I’m trying to get back into doing them now that I’m no longer tossing my cookies. We used the recipe and baking directions from this site, and the results were what you would expect from the artistic visions of a three and five year old.
I basically let them do the rolling out and cutting of the ornaments. We used a straw to cut out a little hole for the string–next time, we’ll use something a little bigger.
After baking and cooling the ornaments for a day or two, they painted them. I really do need to make Tommy a paint smock so he doesn’t have to keep using a toddler bib.
We used up almost all of our craft paint!
The most time consuming part was covering them with the Mod Podge after the paint dried, and I decided to do that step myself since their painting left something to be desired in the consistent coverage department. I probably spent as long Mod Podging as all the other steps combined. Oh well–I think that is pretty standard for art projects for this age! Hopefully our hard work will be displayed on our families’ Christmas trees this year!

You’re done being sick? Hooray!!!
Oh how fun!! I’ve never made these kinds of ornaments but my kids and I are going to have to give it a try!
