Farm Share, Week 4

farmshareweek4.jpgThis week was pretty much all normal stuff that I actually buy at the grocery store–carrots, lettuce, potatoes, and broccoli–plus a couple fun new things–collard greens and scallions.  Last week we didn’t get a box because the cold weather has pushed back the season, so I caught up on using up all of our old stuff and am excitedly planning this week’s menu.  Up for tonight–a Martha Stewart recipe for Pasta, Prosciutto, and Potato Pie!  So last week I got a great recipe for pasties from a UP-er…any southerners have good collard greens dishes we should try?

I tried to get myself to like collard greens (and mustard greens, and kale) because they’re so much cheaper than spinach, but they are all too bitter for me to like straight. The best way I found for me was cutting them up small and mixing them up with mashed potatoes. Make sure you cut out the stem, it’s really tough.

And I usually use the white part of scallions at the beginning of a stirfry, and the green parts as garnish.

Thanks! Good to know about the stem…

I am going to give this child a stern talking to about his/her dilly-dallying. Not acceptable!
You’ll have to let me know how the recipes go. And how did the pasties turn out?

The pasties were fabulous! I put the leftovers in the freezer for after the baby comes, but I’m seriously tempted every time I open it to get them out for dinner now! =)

I’m so envious–my farmshare doesn’t start for another week, and I’m dying to see what we’re going to get! Your scallions and carrots look huge!

Emily, I got kale at the grocery store the other day and thought of you… 🙂

So Tommy officially does NOT like collard greens…he sat and picked every single piece out of his pie last night. Oh well! =)
