Farm Share, Week 12

farmshareweek12.jpg

This week is more like it!  Our farm share box was nice and full, and we should be able to use everything.  With green and red leaf lettuce and a big bag of baby spinach, we’re set for salads for the week!  Another pint of fresh strawberries…yum!  The big head of kale and the bunch of asparagus have me pretty sure I know what’s been in season for the past 6 weeks!  Oh well, kale is supposedly one of the best superfoods out there, and Derek isn’t sick of asparagus yet.  We have a large bag of cilantro, and I have to admit that I  haven’t been very good about using my herbs yet.  I have oregano and something else still sitting in my cooler drawer from past weeks, and I’m not really a fan of cilantro.  I love Mexican, just not with cilantro.  We might be finding a friend to take it off our hands.  And those weird white things are daikon radishes.  Supposedly they cook up like carrots or regular radishes.  Hmmm…maybe we’ll hide them in eggrolls again?  I’m sortof in a rut for using extra-random veggies, but hey, I still have some leftover wraps from last week!  If anyone has any great suggestions for using cilantro so it doesn’t taste like cilantro or for using lettuce in anything other than a salad, please let me know. =)

First, I love the top picture of Lizzie below, Emily! So cute! Second, here’s an asparagus idea:

Lee does not like asparagus, but my mom bought and left some a few weeks ago, so I decided to try this since so many reviewers said you couldn’t even taste the asparagus in the end. As unbelievable as it sounds, they were right, and Lee even went for seconds (and ate the leftovers!).

Still working to get that baby box to the post office… Sorry!

I can’t believe you don’t like cilantro! Oh man!!! Jay makes killer salsa. We also just made a Chilean Dahl that called for cilantro and that was good, but if you don’t like the flavor, then… I don’t think I can help you! We also use cilantro on tortilla soup.
I also have this asparagus/mango/chicken recipe that I sorta made up. It’s easy and good. I use Mango Acai juice from Trader Joe’s, some of their peach salsa, asparagus and chicken. Brown the chicken, then put the juice and salsa in a pan with the chicken and asparagus and cook until chicken is done (just make sure the asparagus isn’t mushy). We like it. It’s easy, fresh tasting…

I also have this recipe for a cheesy broccoli casserole that I usually throw green beans in, but I bet the asparagus would be great in it, too. But I like asparagus.

As another NON-fan of cilantro, I do have a nice recipe for a kind of potato salad (potatoes, avocados, lime) that uses a lot of cilantro in the dressing but for some reason really doesn’t taste like it. Let me know if you want it. xo

I am with you on the cilantro! I think it tastes like dishsoap! Haha!

I’m with Kristen–if I were closer I’d take the cilantro off your hands. I use it in everything I can, but, again, that means I can’t tell you what to use it in where you can’t taste it! Ideas, though, include in southwestern wraps or migas.

I have read that for some people, cilantro tastes like soap, and there’s nothing you can do to make yourself like it. Just a weird quirk of the tastebuds, I guess.

But I am another fan and can’t think of any recipes where it doesn’t taste like itself – unless you cook the heck out of it, but then it doesn’t taste like anything and looks like green sludge, so what’s the point?

And this random blog post I found says the cilantro-soap thing is true for 40% of the population … and it looks like that’s also true for about 40% of your blog commenters. 🙂

Ha ha, I need to quit posting before I’m done researching: Here’s an NPR story on the phenomenon, with a little actual science:
