Today the kids finished up their session of swimming lessons at CLU, our old stomping grounds. Maybe it’s because I did summer league swim team for years growing up, but there’s something so appropriately summery about spending your summer days at the pool! The kids all passed into the next level, but honestly, after privates […]

Busy Summer Days
Posted in California, Children's Books, Elizabeth, Friends, Janie, Susanna, Tommy on Jun 28th, 2018
I thought that we had a pretty low-key summer planned, but we actually have barely caught our breath all month. This week the kids are doing just a six-day swimming lesson session to kick start their skills before a summer at the pool. We couldn’t find anyone to teach lessons on campus, so we’re driving […]
The Beginning of Summer Break
Posted in Elizabeth, Janie, Susanna, Tommy on Jun 18th, 2018
We haven’t officially done our last day of school traditions yet (though our last day for legal purposes was last Wednesday), but we’re taking advantage of the sunshine and wide-open schedule to play, play, play, inside and outside!
Blueberries!
Posted in California, Elizabeth, Friends, Janie, Susanna, Tommy on Jun 15th, 2018
This week we made our annual trip to Underwood Farms Somis to pick blueberries! This time we took along Judah and Ari, and the kids picked over 11 pounds of berries, not counting the ones they ate in the fields. Now we’re feasting on blueberries at home!
This weekend, the Hwangs came over to swim and barbecue with us and left Jonathan to spend the night for the first sleepover for both boys! The Hwang boys are such kindred spirits–Jeremiah came in our house and promptly asked me for a dictionary to read (which he then did), and Jonathan regaled the kids […]

We were supposed to have one last beach day with the Fishers last week, but it was cloudy and overcast, so instead, we did a cuddle up and read day! Sunde and I made brunch, Kim brought fruit, the mom and big kids read aloud all morning long, we played Bring Your Own Book, colored, […]
Leo Carrillo Beach

Today Kim and I took our kids (and half of Sunde’s) to Leo Carrillo Beach to go tide pooling. We had never been, and it was so fun that we can’t wait to go back! Caves, waves, so much sea life–it was the perfect homeschool outing! Oh, we are so glad the Fishers are here […]
Goodbye to CBS
Posted in Elizabeth, Homeschooling, Janie, Susanna, Tommy on May 10th, 2018
Today was the last day of our seventh year of Community Bible Study. CBS was our first successful attempt at finding real community in California, and it’s been the most constant spiritual presence in our lives out here, as it took us only 3 months to find CBS but 3 or 4 years to find […]
Another Visit to the Huntington
Posted in California, Elizabeth, Friends, Homeschooling, Janie, Musings, Susanna, Tommy on May 9th, 2018
When a group of homeschool friends announced they were doing a field trip to the Huntington, we pulled out our membership card and tagged along. It’s amazing what a difference a month made with the flowers! All the roses were heavily pruned a month ago, and this week, they’re all in full bloom!
Mission Santa Barbara
Posted in California, Elizabeth, Friends, Homeschooling, Janie, Susanna, Tommy on Apr 27th, 2018
This week a bunch of our friends headed up to Santa Barbara to tour the mission, burial site of Karana, the girl from Island of the Blue Dolphins. I’ve never seen so many children geeked out in a cemetery before. We visited the huerta where Zia worked in the fictional Blue Dolphins sequel, and we […]
