So many sewing projects…

I really should stop procrastinating….it makes for late nights and sleepy days!  With two official baby showers in 8 days, I’ve been quite the busy baby quilter of late.  Emily Somerville helped me make this strip quilt for Kelli’s shower this past Saturday!  It has dozens of different scraps of fabric in it–and I bet you can’t tell which blocks first-time quilter Emily did and which ones were  mine…

Kelli’s Quilt

The rest of this week I’m going to try to make a new ball gown for the Regency Ball in Lansing this weekend.  Last year’s gown was my first garment in years, and it was pretty obviously a maternity/nursing gown.  I’m hoping to make a nice, normal one this year, but if things continue to go as they have with my practice dress this weekend, I’ll be wearing the old one.=(  It’s my fault for waiting til the last minute (again) to try to get this together!

Tommy the Singer

Tommy’s favorite song is “The B-I-B-L-E” (preferably sung loudly and with all the motions).  Tommy loves standing up when we sing “I stand alone on the word of God!” and has just started saying “Bah-Bah!” at the end as I shout, “Bible!”  All hours of the day, you can hear him singing “Ay-Dee-Ay-Dee-Ay-Dee,” which clearly means B-I-B-L-E.  He’s singing as I type!  We’ll try to get it on video soon…

…and check youtube for some updated family videos that Derek uploaded last night…

Our amazing babysitter

We love our babysitter.  Ashley is amazing.  Tommy’s grandmas are great, but we know that they were great mommies, so we take it for granted that they are great grandmas. =)  There’s nothing we should take for granted about Ashley.  She’s taught Tommy how to say “up!” and use the baby sign language for “please,” and she sings him Bible songs and does his jack-in-the-box for waaaay longer than I do.  If I leave out a basket of diapers or Tommy’s clothes to get to after I get back, she folds them and puts them away!  Basically, she’s perfect.

Tonight Derek and I went to the Cardinals game with a bunch of clerks and judges from the 8th Circuit, and Ashley came over to watch Tommy.  I have a suspicion that she is a better homemaker than me.  Tommy was in bed without a fuss at 7:15, she reported.  Why can’t I put my son to bed without a fuss at any hour of the day or night?  Our kitchen was the cleanest it’s been in weeks, with a drying rack full of clean dishes and Tommy’s bib hanging to dry above.  Our living room was immaculate, Tommy’s bedroom completely picked up, and peace generally holding forth at the Muller home when we arrived back half an hour ago.  For this I gladly shell out $8/hour plus a tip.  Ashley is one of many people that we will certainly miss when we move this summer.  I wonder if I could convince her parents to let me take her along to Chicago as an au pair if I promise to homeschool her in all the same subjects she’d be doing at home.

Anyway, I used to be that kind of babysitter when I was 14–could put the kids to bed at the proper time even better than the parents, washed up the supper dishes, and put all the toys away.  Now I know why parents raved about me and gave me “tips”….but I really want to know what happened to me in the last 11 years….I’m pretty sure no one would tip me for my mommy/homemaker performance these days.  Clean dishes and picked up toys are a major accomplishment some days.  Heck, showering by noon is a major accomplishment some days!  I’m going to try to take care of Tommy as well as Ashley would for the rest of the week.  Maybe he’ll go down without a fuss for me one of these nights!

Gardening

ourgarden
We decided to celebrate the sunny afternoon by planting our vegetable garden!  Tommy was very helpful–he grabbed big handfuls of dirt every time I had planted something–just to make sure it was nice and mixed.  I had to explain that the tomato and squash seeds need to stay under the dirt in order to grow…

dirtygardener

Okay, I’m a mommy of a little boy.  I shouldn’t be grossed out when he eats dirt.  But eeeewwww!  I guess he thought it looked like his birthday cake….

fiveteeth

As promised, evidence that he does indeed have five teeth!  We were playing peekaboo in his new box fort and apparently the camera scared him when he was expecting to see Mommy’s face…

A weekend in Indiana

After much last-minute stress and scrambling, we managed to make it to Indiana for the weekend!  Our first stop (literally–no diaper or gas or food stops the first four hours) was in Bloomington to stay at the Talcott Family Bed and Breakfast.

Ellie and TommyIn keeping with tradition, we ate Anna’s great food, talked and talked, and stayed up way too late playing Caylus. I managed to squeak in a win just before midnight, beating David by just one point! I wish I’d thought to take a picture of the board, but I’ll not easily forget my hour of triumph. Bright and early the next morning, the kids were up and playing–Ellie being her affectionate self to Tommy, who loved the attention!

lauren’s quilt All too soon, we had to head north for South Bend, getting to campus just in time for Lauren’s baby shower (the original reason for our trip).  I wasn’t planning on surprising Lauren, but apparently neither Lesley-Anne or I had mentioned that I was coming.  How fun to accidentally surprise the guest of honor!  I haven’t gotten all the pictures back yet, but here we are with the quilt I finished for her on the car ride up.   It was wonderful to see all the Sunday School girls again and sit between my dear prayer group girls and pretend I still belonged at Notre Dame!  Was it just a year ago that we were all feasting on tea treats at Lauren’s for Tommy’s baby shower?!?  How time flies!

NielsensThe next order of business was visiting the Nielsens and meeting young master Edmund.  Just getting together was quite an achievement–with the nap and eating schedules of three young children in the mix, our plans morphed several times before we saw Edmund (oh, and his family).  He is such a snuggly little cutie–and Magdalene has become quite the little lady!  (And despite being a year and a day younger, my porky young son is a good pound heavier…)  Tommy had quite a good time breaking the wheel off of her brand new toy stroller.  We would have liked to stay and discuss the relative literary merits of Austen’s best novels, but we decided to beat a hasty retreat before Tommy traumatized Magdalene too much more.

teagues and TommySaturday night we stayed with the Teagues.  Since their Indian Lakes apartment is the same size that ours was, this was a very generous and brave act on their part.  It’s impossible not to trash a 700 square foot space when you’re coming with a baby for the night, but our gracious hosts welcomed us, anyway. Tommy loves Katie and Christopher (and so do we)!  Despite missing a nap and traumatizing his friend earlier that day, he was a bundle of cheerful energy at the Mexican restaurant and back at the apartment.  He loved his rice and the friendly waiter, and he felt pretty pleased with the attention of four adults when he was supposed to be in bed.  (While he was bouncing off the walls and exploring everything, how could we have the heart to put him down?)

tommy at teaguesTommy must like the sounds an Indian Lakes apartment kitchen makes, maybe because he remembers sleeping in one the first six months of his life, but in any case, he slept soundly all night long (a first while traveling!) and woke up cheerful and ready for church!  Our first Sunday back at Trinity since the move was everything that I had hoped.  There’s something special about a church where you’re a member–even the organ-and-drumset accompaniment to all the songs (the latter half of which drives me crazy at every other church) seemed charming, and the worship team had lost none of their gusto.  Pastor Clapper’s sermon on John 15 was so good, and we got to see a family I knew from last summer’s VBS dedicating their new baby!   Oh, I love attending Crossroads here, but I have certainly missed Trinity.  Prayers for finding a similar church when we move to Chicago are much appreciated!

Our trip home was fairly tame–we left Derek’s coat at the Teagues and had to go back for it, then we made several Willett-style 5 minute stops for diaper changes and one Muller-style hour stop at Cracker Barrel, so we got in later than planned–and here we are back at home, tired but happy!  And somehow in the chaos of the weekend, Tommy cut through his fifth tooth.  Pictures of that tomorrow, I hope…

The first bike helmet

So what does a mommy do when awakened at 3 am by a teething infant’s screams?  After an hour and a half of trying to fall back asleep?  Why get up and deep clean the fridge, of course!  Then finish a baby quilt for a friend.  Then sort emails ’til dawn.  Then run around like a madwoman all day trying to get ready for a weekend trip!

new helmet While I was doing laundry and packing and figuring out last minute plans, Tommy was acting awfully cute.  We got him a new bike helmet so that I won’t have a heart attack when he’s scooting around in the back driveway.  He loves it, though it’s not quite properly fitted yet.  I couldn’t resist a photo shoot!  Sadly, by the time our junky camera got charged up, the first glow of excitement was gone.  I did finally capture his new teeth on film, however.  Here is a facebook album of the other highlights.

Home decorating

Per Janet’s request, pictures of our accent wall at our old South Bend apartment.

Before
before accent wall

After
after accent wallDoesn’t this look so much better?!  We haven’t really had a chance to do much new decorating since we’ve been in this house, but we like the paint well enough to let it go.  I did originally have great plans for decorating our office/guest room here in St Louis, but that never panned out.  I do plan to frame a bunch of pictures and do this whole map/travel theme for the office/guest room when we move to Chicago.  I got some really great maps a couple summers ago when we lived in Chicago and I spent the summer drifting in and out of little boutiques when I wasn’t gagging with morning sickness.  Now that Tommy’s a little more predictable, I have great plans for decorating a new house this fall!  I even found some great fabrics at Hobby Lobby when I was shopping for church curtain fabric!  I am sure we’ll have lots of exciting home decorating pictures to show in a few more months…

Daffodils

daffodils

Spring has come to the Muller home.  All of our flower beds are exploding with blossoms!  Since it is supposed to rain and hail today, I thought I’d go cut a vase of our very own daffodils before they get ruined.  Don’t they look cheery?!

Big Boy Shoes!

shoes IWell, Tommy’s been taking a few steps several times over the past few days, so he is officially into the walking stage.  Today we walked up to Target to buy him his first bought big boy shoes in honor of the occasion.  We had some hand-me-down boots from a friend, but they were a size too big, so whenever I tried to put him in them, his feet looked huge!  So we picked these out.  Cute, aren’t they!  Tommy wanted some blue ones first, but I convinced him that these would be more versatile.  He was so pleased to be buying his own shoes!

shoes IIYou can almost see the fourth tooth in this first picture, too.  It finally broke through this morning (I believe at about 3 am, to be precise), and he is pleased as punch to be able to chew with all four of his front teeth!  I will miss his gummy little smile, though!
