Wowsers, my left foot is having a bad year.  I’m pretty sure I broke my left little toe this afternoon on a wooden box the kids had left out.  Of course it’s while Derek is out of town.  I never seem to hurt myself when he’s actually here to help out.  My toe is warring with the spot of my metarsal break for which can throb more painfully tonight.  At least I already have the magic bone stimulator machine!  Looks like I’ll be doing a double set of ultrasound therapy before bed tonight…

Does this little magical puppy work? Who knows! You can't feel ultrasound waves, so there's no way of checking whether it works! But it's been forcing me to sit still for at least 20 minutes a day, so there has to be some side benefit.

Does this little magical puppy work? Who knows! You can’t feel ultrasound waves, so there’s no way of checking whether it works! And there’s no control group to compare with my rate of healing with the machine.  We might have probably spent hundreds of dollars on a placebo, though the podiatrist (who is younger than I am) told me that studies have shown it could stimulate bone growth.  But it’s been forcing me to sit still for at least 20 minutes a day, so there has to be some side benefit at least, right???

Can everybody just pray that I don’t mangle my body any further before the move?

Increasingly Toothless Smile

She’s catching up to her big brother! (And nope, no signs that the top front tooth is growing in any time soon…)

Braces Time

Last week, the poor kid had to be measured in the most awkward ways.

One last picture of Tommy’s mouth pre-braces.

It’s a new look!  Hopefully we’ll expand this upper palate and make some room for the other adult teeth to come in!

Bribery

So I think my Canon Rebel DSLR is on its last legs.  I wanted to take an adorable picture last night of the three girls snuggling in bed together, but no matter what I did (or how many cards or batteries I tried), it refused to turn on and take a picture.  It’s been in heavy use for almost 8 years, and I think I’m ready to upgrade from the XTi anyway, but the timing is so stinky, with the whole draining-our-life-savings-to-buy-a-condo-with-no-yard thing we’re doing next month.  My cell phone camera is awful, but it looks like that’s what I’ll be making do with for a while.  (Need to remember that my dumbphone camera was so bad that it wasn’t even worth taking pictures–at least my DSLR waited to die until I had a smartphone!)

The kids and I are missing Derek.  He was gone most of last week, and he left early yesterday and won’t be back ’til tomorrow.  Everyone is fighting for my attention, the terrible 4s are way worse than the terrible 2s, my stress level is through the roof, we really need to start packing, and oh yes, we have schoolwork to do.  Today I bribed the five of us with a trip to Starbucks if we could hold it together for a couple hours this morning.  I managed to buy thank you gift cards for Tommy’s soccer coaches, the kids got steamers, and I’m using the caffeine boost to power through another day of single mom-ing it.  And look!  They’re all dressed!  Thanks to Elizabeth, who has stepped up and been taking Janie to the potty all morning, put her in a disposable for our outing, got her dressed in clean clothes after she drenched herself with dishwater right before we needed to leave, and even found matching shoes and put them on.

We’ve Got a Closing Date

Haven’t had time to post for a while because life has been extremely stressful.  Derek was gone most of last week at a conference in DC, and he left again this morning for a couple days in Dallas.  And Pepperdine finally got their act together and gave us a closing date of Dec. 11.  Of course, that’s right when Derek is giving his finals, so I will have literally no help with packing, again.  I have a few tween and teen girls who I’m thinking I’m going to pay to come over and help me pack the week before.  The effort of keeping up with everything without Derek has my foot aching by the end of the day (and sometimes by mid-morning), so I’m trying so hard to stay off of it, which means the house is out of control dirty and messy, laundry has been mounded on the couch for six days and counting (every time I think I’m close to getting it all put away, someone wets the bed or we get the news that we were exposed to lice or Janie makes a mud puddle and falls in it, and I’m frantically doing loads until everything mounds up again).

So I’ve done no prep work on curtains/furniture for the new house, I didn’t manage to hold a garage sale last Saturday, and I am no closer to picking through the kids’ toys than I was this summer.  At least this closing date means I don’t need to even bother doing any Christmas decorating or baking–we will be living in chaos the entire month!

When we checked out the condo with Grandma and Grandpa a week and a half ago, it was overwhelmingly unfinished.  But this is the view the girls will have from their bedroom:

No school today!

Our charter school is off for Veteran’s Day, so instead of giving in to my inclination to push ahead with our schoolwork in order to take more time off while moving, I let the kids decide to just have a lazy day at home.  The big girls played nicely in their room for most of the morning, Janie has been playing with play doh and coloring, Tommy is drawing, and I read a children’s book and caught up on chores.  Bliss!

Well, this is a relief!  But is it non-GMO, vegan, gluten-free, organic, paleo, and free range?

Tea Party with Friends

When Charlotte and Trenton came over this evening, we decided to have a tea party, complete with lemon curd and double clotted cream from the British import store downtown.  Pinkies up!

Pumpkin Carving

The kids got started carving pumpkins with Grandpa before everyone got tired of it, which is as far as we’ve gotten in years.  Then it’s been raining the last two days, so they are probably rotting, half-carved, on the back patio.  Oh well!  At least they drew on them!
