Third time’s the charm?

After chipping her front tooth two years ago and again in April, Elizabeth has managed to lose the whole thing this time.  She was out playing in the back yard after her bath, and we think she got her nightgown tangled in the (toddler size) scooter and flipped up over the handle bars, crashing face first and knocking out the entire front tooth, root and all.  Derek yelled for me and carried her in crying hard, her mouth full of blood.  The dentist on call said there was nothing to be done for the tooth and just to give her a soft/liquid diet today.  I’m going to take her in tomorrow to make sure her other teeth are okay and that we don’t need to get stitches or anything for her badly cut lip.  She’s holding up pretty well.  Derek was pretty shaken, and I’m devastated.  Thusfar, applesauce, smoothies, and milkshakes have cheered her up, but she already seems self-conscious about her smile.

Too bad the kids seem to be following my pace of late teething and late permanent teeth.

Teaching the Girls to Sew

I’m trying to get pictures up every day this week for Derek to see what we’re doing while he’s gone.  Whew!  There’s a reason I don’t blog every day anymore!

Part of the girls’ “school” has been learning to sew.  Susie is still working on cardboard lacing cards, but Elizabeth actually has a felt and yard kit that we found at JoAnn’s.  They LOVE it!

history

This is a timeline.  At the bottom are an Indian and cannon shot and George Washington on a horse.  ADB for America Defeats Britain.  Next up is the plane that carried the atomic bomb, the Enola Gay, flying over a flag of Japan in WWII.  At the top are Princess Kate [note the hat] and Prince William and baby George!

Janie was pretty tired by the time we did family pictures last week, so the photographer got a lot of great ones of everyone else, but no real smiles from Jane-bug.  So I’ve been trying all week to get a good smile that I can just make into wallets myself.  The current candidates:

(real smile, if you don’t mind carpet in the background)

047

(a little bit fuzzy, as she was balancing on my feet!)

064

(She’s actually looking at the big kids here.  And do I really want people to have a picture of my feet in their wallet?)

(Yeah, basically the bumbo wasn’t conducive to smiley faces…)

First Day of School!

Because we’re doing a four-day week this year, we’re starting school today!

The kids woke up to a new map above the table (we replaced the world map with a US map), biscuits with sausage gravy, blueberry lemonade (they NEVER get juice and all drank two glasses full!) and new art supplies to decorate their first-day-of-school posters.

Susie wanted to do one, too.

Today will be a light day of schoolwork–Bible, math, and handwriting review for Tommy, and starting phonics and writing with Elizabeth.  I’ll blog more on our school schedule once we get into the swing of things (and figure out if my plans for this year are actually doable!)…

Nine Years!

Nine years, five new driver’s licenses, four fiesty kids, one miscarriage, lots of hard work, thousands of diaper changes, one blessed girl who still sobs uncontrollably whenever she’s extremely happy.

Little Pieces of Paper

Susie has discovered scissors.  Our house is now full of little pieces of paper.
