(Warning: occasional hyperbole and shameless partisanship below.)
If you know the Muller family, you know we’re pretty conservative. Okay, very conservative. The Republican Party (arguably founded in Jackson, Mich., just miles from our alma mater) was founded on a platform dedicated to “the imperative duty of Congress to prohibit in the territories those twin relics of barbarism-polygamy and slavery.”
While we don’t think the Republican Party is half (a quarter?) as conservative as we’d like it (and although we disagree about a few stray matters–I’m pro-amnesty, Em’s anti), we, of course, are proud that the Party remains dedicated to contemporary spin-offs of those “twin relics of barbarism”–redefining marriage and redefining human life.
But enough punditry. I’ve begun accumulating pinbacks to the great conservative causes of the last century. (Alas, my Coolidge-Dawes pin hasn’t yet arrived.) They are:
Roosevelt for Ex-President and No Third Term: As Pres. F. Roosevelt chose to toss aside the limits of federal government in a time of “crisis,” perpetuated by his own programs that justified further intrusion into State affairs, conservatives valiantly sought to limit the damage of the New Deal to two terms. Alas, a failed cause, and the failure lingers to this day as we’re burdened with the Ponzi scheme known as Social Security.
I’m for McCarthy: We give two cheers for McCarthyism. McCarthy wasn’t the best at, well, things like “integrity,” but championing anti-Communism was a noble cause, and one that left an indelible imprint on the face of conservatism in this country for half a century.
Goldwater [right]: Ah, AuH20. A great movement for the contemporary Republican Party.
Reagan for Governor, Reagan ’76, and Reagan: The “true” conservatives nowadays insist that if you weren’t there for Reagan in ’76 in his battle against Ford, you can’t be a “true” conservative. It’s the kind of “I liked this band before they were mainstream” argument that’s as silly as… well, band disputes. But it’s certainly indicative of the root of a conservative movement. (If only he’d abolished the Department of Education as he’d promised…)
McCain-Palin: Readers of this blog know where we stand, of course.
Palin Power: And you’ll know where we stand, win or lose, in 2012. (Tommy’s diaper bag now attests, too.) We hope this piece of flair, in particular, will be a grin-worthy momento for our kids in the years ahead.

Warning: inability to use the word “memento” correctly above.
🙂
Hm, I must have been thinking “momentum” at the time…
