I’ve blogged a bit on children’s literature here, and it’s definitely one of my favorite topics of conversation with other moms/English majors/literature lovers.  So tomorrow I’m condensing all of my thoughts over the past year into an online lecture for www.classicalhomeschooling.org, one of the groups I’m privileged to be a part of!

The lecture is free and open to the public, so you’re all invited to attend.  Directions below.

Thursday, December 11th,
** 6:30-8:30 PM Pacific Time **

Good Children’s Literature

Emily Muller

C.S. Lewis wrote, “I am almost inclined to set it up as a canon that a children’s story which is enjoyed only by children is a bad children’s story. The good ones last.” (from “On Three Ways of Writing for Children”)  Lewis was right; great children’s literature can and should be enjoyed by all ages.  By introducing our children to quality literature from a young age, we can help them develop a life-long appreciation for literature that matters.  This doesn’t happen by letting them loose in the public library to pick whatever they want.  The books our children read should exemplify Truth (a Biblically sound view of the world and human nature), Beauty (well-written and engaging, giving us a taste for quality literature), and Goodness (inspiring our children towards character development).  In this lecture we’ll discuss how to select good reading material from toddlerhood on so that our children will be equipped to read and appreciate the Great Books in high school and college!

To attend this lecture, please go to https://escondidotutorial.webex.com   Click on the tab at the top left of your window that says Training Center.  You will see a list of all the meetings currently running.  If the meeting room has been opened, you will see “classicalhomeschooling.org” on the list.    Click join next to this room.

When prompted, enter your first and last name and email and then use the password “Antigone” when prompted.  The software will take a little while to download when you enter the first time, so please be patient if nothing appears to be happening.  Once you are in the room you will be asked if you would like to join the VOIP audio conference- you need to join this to hear the audio, so please accept it.  You will need a microphone on your computer if you would like to participate in the discussion as well as a high speed internet connection – dsl, cable or satellite.
If you are having technical difficulties, you can call the webex tech support number – 1-866-229-3239.   Please do not call tech support unless the room is running.
Welcome to classicalhomeschooling.org!

umm… so for those of us in vastly different time zones… will you have a manuscript of your lecture, say, by December 22nd? 😉
