Backyard Days of Summer

This week, I made a mistake.  I let Tommy stay inside, building legos, while the girls and I frisked around and expended energy in the kiddie pool.  By evening, the effects of my choice were glaring.  Tommy’s been a bundle of energy, with dreadful consequences.  No more legos before noon for my energetic lad.  Meanwhile, the girls have been sleeping well, for naps and overnight, after their muddy adventures.

The girls look like they are having a grand time in the mud! I have also found that Aidan needs to be outside and active for several hours earlier in the day or else evening is chaos! He usually works on Legos while his baby brothers are napping. Off subject, do you allow Tommy to read The Adventures of Tintin? Aidan hadn’t seemed interested in them until recently, so we grabbed a book at the library yesterday. I’m not too sure how I feel about it after browsing it first…We borrowed the title TINTIN IN AMERICA.

We love Tintin, but I actually am not a huge fan of Tintin in America. The portrayal of Indians is pretty racist (common at the time, but not something I want my kids taking in). I won’t let him read Tintin in the Congo because it is even worse. We do like several other ones–Destination Moon, The Black Island, and the ones the recent movie was based on (Secret of the Unicorn, Red Rackham’s Treasure). They definitely have slapstick comic book violence, and Captain Haddock often gets into trouble for his excessive drinking. I definitely look over them individually before letting Tommy read them. And I’m sure Tommy will love the movie one day, but it’s way too suspenseful for him right now!

Good to know! We haven’t allowed Aidan to see the movie yet either. I will have to look for those other titles. He is totally captivated by it!
