Day Two of the Stomach Flu

Tommy hasn’t eaten more than one spoonful of jello since losing his dinner 36 hours ago.  He has had one 8 ounce water bottle full of  pedialyte, two pedialyte popsicles, and about half a pedialyte juicebox in the interim.  Maybe 12 ounces, total?  He says he’s still not hungry or thirsty.  His fever is gone.  How long before I should be concerned about dehydration?

Janie tossed her cookies (not just normal newborn spit-up) a few hours ago and has been remarkably uninterested in nursing today, though I did force feed her a bit at lunchtime before she collapsed for a nap.  What does stomach flu look like in a four week old?

The big girls are telling me they’re sick and want to watch TV all day and eat jello, too.

And I have let them watch so many episodes of Mr Roger’s Neighborhood (thank goodness for Amazon Prime instant streaming!) that I have had “Won’t You  Be My Neighbor?” stuck in my head for about 18 hours and counting.

On the plus side, I got a six hour stretch of sleep last night because Derek took the 2-5 shift and gave Janie a bottle I’d pumped!

So sorry you are sick. I will pray you don’t get it, I hate throwing up. I have not idea what stomach flu looks like in a newborn, I hope she bounces back quickly so you don’t have to worry took much anout her.

Not sure about newborns and the stomach flu, but my family doctor said that dangerous dehydration does not commonly happen in the US from stomach flu. He told me that as long as K2’s tongue looked wet and his eyes looked normal (vs dry), everything was fine. K2 couldn’t drink hardly anything without throwing it back up in short order. The only thing that worked was that he would have a tsp of pedialyte every 15 minutes as well as a teeny–tiny sliver of banana. He threw up for five days and did not get dehydrated. Hope that gives you some encouragement.

I wouldn’t worry about dehydration much, either. That is a good amount of liquid you got in him, even if it doesn’t seem like it.
I think Ailey thre up once when she was a baby (tho not as little as Jane) when we all had the stomach flu. I think it was real…but so minor due to breast feeding, I would imagine. Praying for rest for you all! And that you don’t get it!!!
