Yesterday Grandma and Grandpa stayed home with the girls while Tommy and I went to CBS. I came out of small group to the big room for the teaching, and Julie, the children’s director, passed me and said, “Don’t be surprised if you see your little guy–we have a surprise for you!” Sure enough, Tommy was hanging out with his Bible study notebook and his teacher.
Julie always starts our large group meeting with a brief update on what’s going on with children’s ministries. This week, she shared that of the 124 children in CBS, 59 are in homeschool class. Of those 59, one little boy is the star memory guru. And she had brought Tommy down to say his memory verses in front of all (200ish?) ladies!
Tommy bravely took the mic, clutching his notebook (which Julie had to pry from his hands), and recited Romans 1:16: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” Julie thought he was done, but he hung on the mic and recited this week’s verse, 1:20: “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” Word perfect! Everyone applauded, and Tommy looked shyly pleased.
I wish I had a picture or video of it all, but since I have a 90’s era dumbphone, I had to rely on a friend who hasn’t sent me the pics from her iphone yet. I was so proud of him for being brave, even though he gets very nervous in crowds. On the way home, he said he can tell that memorizing Mark is helping him memorize shorter memory verses. Hurray!
