I’d assumed that Susie would request a ballet theme for her birthday party this year–I’d bought a ton of ballerina party stuff last year, she’s even more obsessed this year, and she lives in a tutu.  But she insisted back in March that she wanted a “hook in the hand” party, which it took me several days to figure out meant pirates.  The girls would be princesses, of course, but she wanted a pirate themed party.  I was stumped.  Fortunately, I happened to mention my conundrum during a phone date with Naomi, who was doing creative, original party plans well before pinterest.  Knowing how much Susie loves Richard Scarry, Naomi immediately suggested I make the theme around his book Pie Rats, Ahoy!   I immediately bought the book and latched on to Naomi’s idea of mini pies for the guests.  I didn’t know how to tie in the princess theme other than telling Rebekah to come in a princess costume, but as usual, Sarah came to my rescue.  While picking up the big girl bike I’d hidden at their house last week, Sarah pulled out a box of leftover party supplies, including crowns, wands, and bubbles.  Craft, snack, take-home gift, all suddenly provided for me!  The girls decorated crowns and dressed up as princesses while Tommy and James played legos.  Then we made mini apple-blueberry pies for the kids to take home, had cake while I read Pie Rats, Ahoy! to them, and played a bit more.  It was a perfect four year old party!

Rebekah had to go before the pies were cool, and Janie and Ellis had to go down for naps, but James stayed long enough for a photo shoot with the finished products!
