I’ve been wanting to take the kids to LACMA ever since learning that they have a NexGen program for kids where all kids under age 18 get free admission and can bring an adult in for free, too. And there’s so much great art there! But ever since my stressful attempt to take the kids to the Getty, I’ve been leery of taking the kids to another art museum without additional help. But the kids are older, my dad fixed my double stroller (long overdue post coming on that miracle), and we made new homeschooling friends at church who wanted to go. Lika and Sky met us at noon (Janie having napped on the way into the city) and showed us some of their favorite spots. Interestingly, I rarely bother even looking at the modern art because I am a cultural philistine who looks at a black square and thinks that I could literally paint that myself, and if I, the most unartistic person in the world, could do it, how is that black square art? I prefer the European 1600-1900 galleries in any museum. But where I am underwhelmed, the kids were actually inspired. You could see the wheels turning–I can paint a black square like that! I can be an artist! It’s good to broaden their cultural horizons.
The children’s gallery has a bunch of painting and stamping and coloring supplies set up for kids to use. Bug was particularly fond of the rubber stamps. We ended up staying there for over an hour! If only it hadn’t taken well over two hours to get back…note to self: leave downtown well before 3 pm.
