This morning, I sat down and looked through Tommy’s most recently completed notebook of drawings. I saw things to disturb and amuse me…
This is a Cars representation of the crucifixion/communion. The small arrows are pointing to “my blood that is poured out for you/the cup being poured” and “my body that is broken for you/the bread being broken.” We have had to talk to Tommy in the past about the fact that Lightning McQueen is not Jesus. I actually forbade him to draw any more Cars Bible stories, because I felt like it was a little sacrilegious. I don’t know when he did this drawing–it could have been before my prohibition. Now I need Derek to come home from his trip and sit down with Tommy to explain why we let them watch Veggie Tales but don’t want them drawing Cars Bible Tales. Or maybe to tell me I’m overreacting.
Standard Willett Family Underground Fort, inspired by Grandpa.
One of many depictions of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
These are all aircraft inspired by a Things That Fly book at Grandma’s house. Note the bombs.
See, now I’m suddenly not as comfortable with Veggie Tales!

Em,
Look at how well he draws and colors…. emphasize the + and redirect those to other forms of art…. like farm animals and tractors!!!
Not to encourage sacrilege, but I think Tommy might be on to something. Cars plus the Bible could be worth developing….just think of how much money the creators of Veggie Tales made:).
Seems to me the signs of an (off the chart) bright child’s way of processing and internalizing. Seems like he really understands Jesus’s sacrifice. Seems like you have done a good job in teaching bible stories and reminding him about idols… maybe I am completely wrong…but I would almost see this as encouraging!
I see it as completely hilarious and sooooo boy like! Having 3 little dudes myself, we relate much of practical life and spiritual life to cars, trains, trucks, and the like. 🙂
ha! Glad to know we’re not the only ones!
