This morning, we packed up the car and headed into the Valley with our homeschooling friends Katie and Jack to visit the Getty Museum. Our excuse was wanting to see their four Monet paintings to finish up our month studying Monet, but in typical field trip fashion, we spent less than 10 minutes in the Impressionism room.
The tram ride up the mountain was pretty exciting.
We spent some time in the family room, the highlight of which was losing Susie. She somehow decided to wander out and across the campus, back to where we’d started with a snack while I nursed. I ran all over looking for her, to see her running back towards me, crying that she was poopy. Thank goodness Katie was along to stay with the big kids.
They have a neat little art detective game for kids, having them look for four pictures around the Renaissance art wing. Unfortunately, my kids weren’t really into the art itself, so as soon as we found our pictures, we headed out to look out over the city.
And I discovered that taking Susie to a no-touch museum is really stressful. I ended up putting Janie down in the stroller and wearing Susie in the art galleries. Sometimes it’s nice to have a lightweight two year old. The sculptures and fountains were more fun for everyone, and after feeding Janie in the gardens, we headed back for naptime.
Next time we go to an art museum, I think I’ll aim for a higher adult-t0-child ratio. I asked Tommy if he learned anything. He said, “No, but I had fun!” Sigh. But at least we can finally say we’ve been to the Getty!

Don’t worry – kids don’t notice when they learn most things. 🙂
