Christmas Music

This year has been a little disappointing on the Christmas music front.  Elizabeth was too sick to go to CBS yesterday, so only Tommy got to sing in the children’s program Christmas recital.  And the lighting was terrible, so the pictures are rough.  He did a great job, though, singing the loudest of any kid up there!

I’ve also struggled with the lack of traditional Christmas music out here in general, so I’ve tried to compensate by listening to Amahl and the Night Visitors, my absolute favorite Christmas album.

Amahl is an opera about a poor crippled boy and his mother who welcome the three kings on their way to find Jesus.  It has beautiful music that always evokes the advent season for me!  I love it so much I stole my family’s copy of the CD for enough years that my parents gave in and gave it to me for Christmas a couple years ago. =)

And the kids are supposed to do a little children’s choir at church for the Christmas Eve service, so maybe we’ll get some cute footage of the kids singing then…

I love this kid!

“Snow” at the Zoo

We spent Sunday afternoon up at the Santa Barbara Zoo’s Snow Leopard Festival.  The way people out here do “winter” is to import a bunch of fake snow and then charge parents an arm and a leg to stand in line for 15 minutes at a time so that the kids can “sled” down a fake “hill” in “snow” in 65 degree sunshine.  Since Michigan failed us on the snow front last Christmas, we ignored the pathetic aspect of this practice and went with it like true SoCal natives.  We’d planned to meet up with the Pelttaris until David got sick, but it was still a fun family outing even without our friends.  Oh–and this was the first time I used my new camera lens!

Fortunately, our snow pants from two years ago still fit the big kids…

After his first run, Tommy said that sledding was his favorite thing he’d ever done at the zoo.

Making a snow angel is a little uncomfortable when you don’t have a coat on.

It shouldn’t have surprised us that our littlest daredevil loved sledding, too!

Cheering for Tommy!

Elizabeth was the only one interested in hugging the penguin and snowman.  I think they traumatized the other two the way clowns do.

“Do It!”

Susie’s first sentence is “Do it!”  As in, don’t help me–I can do it myself!  Or, I’m old enough to do what the big kids are doing, too!  She started saying it at the beginning of the week and has been saying it more and more each day.  This girl sure is impatient to be a big kid…

Shirt Dress, Take Two

After putting all my sewing stuff away Sunday night, I decided that I really did want to try one more shirt dress while it was all fresh in my mind.  So I pulled everything out again during naptime Monday and totally blew off cleaning the kitchen, sorting junk in the garage so Derek can pull his car in, and folding laundry (some of which has been sitting, clean, in my room for a week now).

But here’s the finished product!  Realizing I’m no good at making my own patterns, I bought the Sweet Little Dress pattern from Leila and Ben.  Bethany had highly recommended it, and it is indeed super easy and straightforward, and I plan to use it again, often!  I went back to MADE and used her tutorial again, actually gathering the waistband this time (since the first dress was too form fitting to gather).  Pulling inspiration from pinterest, I decided to button it up the back this time (so the buttons are actually functional!) and use the waistband fabric at the neck and arms.  I think the extra touches of color pop well against the crisp white.

After the kids were in bed and Derek had called to say he was staying even later at work, I pulled an old dress of mine out of the rag bag for a plain Sweet Little Dress attempt.  I’d stained the skirt with pomegranate juice this fall, but by carefully cutting around the stain and cutting up the bodice, I was able to get the four pieces I needed for a girl-sized dress.  Since it’s a knit, I didn’t have to worry about finishing off seams or being super careful, and I finished it in just over an hour.  Elizabeth loves how it’s stretchy and swishy, though you can’t tell from her serious dreamer look in this picture!

The best thing?  I didn’t have to buy a thing for either dress–Derek’s shirt had ripped at the side seam and couldn’t be mended, the purple fabric is leftover from Susie’s big girl quilt, and I had a ton of elastic left over from fixing up diapers.  I even had the right shades of purple and peach thread for the top stitching of both dresses!  Gotta love free clothes!

(But until I get back on top of housework, I’m not allowing myself to touch my sewing machine again…)

A Shirt Dress

Since I had my sewing machine out this weekend, anyway, I thought I’d take my Sunday afternoon to whip up a shirt dress for Elizabeth.  I found this tutorial for turning a man’s dress shirt into a little girl’s dress, and I’ve been saving Derek’s worn out work shirts for months.  Well, they were pretty straightforward directions, and it took a bit over three hours.  My attempt to adjust the sample pattern up a size using one of Elizabeth’s current favorite dresses turned out to be problematic (it’s a little tight over the torso)…I’m hesitant to try another tutorial that has you making your own pattern.  All in all, though, it’s cute enough for a little girl who has been asking for more dresses!

And Tommy insisted on taking another picture of me with one of his sisters.  I seriously need to replace the batteries in his own camera, or he might permanently borrow mine!

Our Jesse Tree

Just in the nick of time, I finished our Jesse Tree advent calendar.  I got the idea a couple years ago from Christina, but since this is the first time we’ve ever stayed home for the month of December, this was the first year it was worth doing something formal for Advent.  I started working on it about 6 weeks ago, but it’s such a pain to get my sewing stuff out and put it all back away every night, so I didn’t finish it until this afternoon!  I’m not too happy about how a couple of the symbols turned out, but it’s good enough for this year.  Nothing like a deadline. =)  Here’s how it will look on Christmas:

We sortof combined a couple different Jesse Tree readings we found online, primarily here and here, to come up with our own list.  The kids are excited about putting a new symbol on the tree every night, and hopefully this will help all of us prepare to celebrate Jesus’ birth!

Stickers

I wanted to post something today that’s not finished yet, so instead, here is Tommy’s handiwork: portrait of Susie doing stickers

Making Christmas Ornaments

This actually happened a couple weeks ago, but I never got around to posting the pictures.  This year, we did a real Christmas ornament-making extravaganza.  The kids love messy art projects, so I’m trying to get back into doing them now that I’m no longer tossing my cookies.  We used the recipe and baking directions from this site, and the results were what you would expect from the artistic visions of a three and five year old.

I basically let them do the rolling out and cutting of the ornaments.  We used a straw to cut out a little hole for the string–next time, we’ll use something a little bigger.

After baking and cooling the ornaments for a day or two, they painted them.  I really do need to make Tommy a paint smock so he doesn’t have to keep using a toddler bib.

We used up almost all of our craft paint!

The most time consuming part was covering them with the Mod Podge after the paint dried, and I decided to do that step myself since their painting left something to be desired in the consistent coverage department.  I probably spent as long Mod Podging as all the other steps combined.  Oh well–I think that is pretty standard for art projects for this age!  Hopefully our hard work will be displayed on our families’ Christmas trees this year!

Sunday Afternoon Playclothes

What?  Your girls don’t play outside in a tutu or sleeveless dress at the end of November?
