For Grandpa, who will be pleased to know that the kids are making oboes out of duplos again:
I have so many little matters to tell you of, that I cannot wait any longer before I begin to put them down.

Elizabeth’s recent enthusiasm for Little House has coincided with the unearthing of one of my own childhood nightgowns (made by my mom or grandma when I was in the first throes of Little House passion). We’re reading about Laura and Mary and Baby Carrie every day (midway through Little House on the Prairie at the moment), and Elizabeth basks in the glory of her beloved pink flannel nightgown every night. She’s even insistent on changing into clothes before breakfast so that she doesn’t get any food on her nightgown. (I’d prefer the opposite–now she wears her breakfast for the rest of the day…) Inspired by last night’s chapters, she insisted on a snack of bread and butter before a long bedtime discussion of how closely our family resembles the Ingalls!

This year we recycled our costumes from Pennsylvania, because no one here had seen them yet.=) (And because Mommy didn’t have the energy to make anything new this year. Taking ideas for a children’s book foursome for next year…)

Tommy won’t be with Little Bear and Little Sal at tomorrow night’s fall festival–he’s flying to Grandma’s today (with Derek, who has some work stuff back home this week)! So here’s his costume ahead of time.
Get it? He’s Tintin (and Ellie is Snowy)! He asked to be him last year, but I wanted him to coordinate with Elizabeth. This year, he’s getting his wish!

When our friends Greg and Melanie found out that the kids and I had never been to a theme park, they offered to take us to Disneyland with his employee guest passes! We took them up on their offer on Saturday. I wore my detested SI joint belt and took both my nausea meds before we hit the park, and I had minimal hip pain and no nausea the whole day!
Tommy’s favorite ride was getting to drive his own car!
Elizabeth’s favorite ride was the Carousel. She named her horse Jingle Bell.
The girls don’t really know who Minnie Mouse is, but they thought her house was cool!
The other favorite of all three was the Winnie the Pooh ride–probably because it’s the only ride movie they’d seen! Afterwards, they were super excited to meet Eeyore.
They lasted from opening at 8 am until 3:30 with no naps. Susie kind of lost it the last hour, but all in all, we were pleasantly surprised at how well it went!
Many thanks to Greg and Melanie for a fun California experience!

We’ve been doing a lot of books on CD lately, as it’s sometimes hard for me to read to the kids when I’m really nauseated. One winner that the kids and I all love is E B White reading Charlotte’s Web. I’ve talked about how great children’s literature can be enjoyed by kids and adults, and I for one have come to love Wilbur and Charlotte even more than I did as a child! Hearing White himself read the story brings the characters and the little details to life in a fresh, new way. We highly recommend it!

Susanna had her visit with the orthopedist yesterday morning. She won’t need any special therapy or shoes or anything, as it should all correct on its own. Her hips are rotated in, her tibia bones are twisted in, and her feet appear bent but are in fact straight enough. No follow-up necessary. One less medical thing to worry about!
I’ve been having twinges of pain around the left lower back, the site of all the sacroiliac joint problems of the past two pregnancies, but this morning, I woke up in real pain–a sadly familiar feeling. A long, hot shower helped a little, but I’m going to be asking the doctor at my next appointment to go ahead and refer me to a physical therapist to start working on realigning my hips and reducing the pain. I knew it was only a matter of time, but oh, how discouraging it is that it couldn’t wait until my nausea subsided. One more medical thing to worry about!
