Underwood, Again

When another Pepperdine homeschool family asked us if we wanted to hit up the pumpkin patch, we didn’t have to think twice!  The kids love Underwood Farms, and we spent another three hours there on Monday!

If festive pictures are this hard with three kids, should I even bother trying with four?

Evelyn and Marianne are big fans of the rides, so we tried out the train (much more fun than last year!) and the pony ride (which helped us understand the threshing machine described at the end of Little House in the Big Woods–too cool!).

And Susie LOVED pretending to drive the farm equipment!

It is, in fact, easier to do photo shoots when there are two moms to corral babies and click away nonstop with their DSLRs!

The beginning of a fall tradition?

I was SO dead by the time we got home, but the fun was worth it!

White Dresses

Yesterday morning, Elizabeth insisted that she and Susie both needed to wear white dresses to church.  Their Sunday School teachers complimented them on their matching (just what Elizabeth loves to hear!), and they were pretty pleased with themselves for the rest of the day.

These pictures also give a great view of Susie’s inward pronation, particularly her left leg from the knee down.  In other news, this past week and a half has been really rough, sickness-wise.  It feels like I’m getting worse, not better.  I’m really struggling to figure out what else I can do…I hate asking for help, but last night I asked one church mom for help with the kids this week and another for a meal that I’d turned down earlier when I thought I was getting better.  I’m starting to show, which means my center of gravity is starting to change, so any day now, my hip will dislocate again, and I’m generally an emotional mess.  Prayers much appreciated!

Susanna at 18 Months

With the cooler weather last week, we finally switched out the rest of Susie’s 6-12 month clothes for 12-18 month pants and long sleeve shirts.  Of course, it’s been back in the upper 80s this week, so she hasn’t gotten to wear many of the “new” clothes yet.

Susanna’s biggest development over the past month has been truly dropping her morning nap.  It was a rough transition, but she will often sleep in later in the mornings as long as she doesn’t have a dirty diaper.  Her one nap is generally only two hours long, but she is worn out enough to go to bed without much fuss.  I am still adjusting to having to deal with her curiosity all morning without a break!  In the time that it takes me to go to the bathroom, fix oatmeal, discipline a sibling, or unload the dishwasher, she can pull a game off the shelf and scatter all the pieces, sneak into the bathroom with a tea cup and go to town in the toilet, dump out the entire bin of crayons all over the family room and color a wall, or find a nonwashable marker and deface the kitchen table and her entire outfit.  (Anyone have a solution for getting nonwashable [not Sharpie] marker out of varnished wood?)  She can climb onto the kitchen chairs, so anything on the kitchen table is fair game (hence the art supply-related messes we’ve had of late).  She can open and close the screen door by herself now, so she is in and out of the backyard all the time. I feel really worn out keeping her out of trouble.  Sometimes I just go stick her in her crib for five minutes so I can clean up a particularly bad mess.  But I’m hesitant to use the crib/pack n play too much, as I can see her climbing out any day now.  I’d forgotten how hard it is to do full-circle discipline with an under-two year old, but as I look back at accounts of the big kids at this age (which I’ve linked below), Q is not the only naughty 18 month-old I’ve had!  Also, rereading my posts around those updates reminds me that I’m always throwing up when my kids are this age.  It will be interesting to find out how I handle toddlerhood when not pregnant.

On a positive note, she has learned to walk around to her side of the van and wait for me to open her side door.  She can now climb into the van and up into her carseat by herself!  She even tries to buckle her straps.  She will generally run and grab whatever I ask her for, and she’s good at putting things in the trash (sometimes TOO good, as when I find random kids’ game pieces or duplos in the trash can!).  She is very cooperative about having her diaper changed, getting dressed, and going to bed.  She does well in the church nursery, and all the workers like how chatty and cheerful she is.

Her 18 month check went well this morning.  Dr. Antall says she’s just a long and lean build, so he’s not concerned about her weight.  He did refer her to an orthopedist to check out her pronation, and we’re actually going to see the same doctor who saw me for a foot injury this summer.  She cut through her 10th tooth (a molar) this morning (I had to go in at 1:30 am to give her more tylenol), and health-wise, she’s basically in good shape!

Helping Like Mary and Laura

After reading some Little House in the Big Woods this morning, Elizabeth has totally been inspired to help Mommy around the house.  We made everyone’s beds, put all the books away on the right shelves, and folded diapers and wipes together!

Apple Pumpkin Prints

This week, I did a kid swap with a homeschooling friend from church–I took Joey for the morning, and she took Elizabeth to play with her daughter.  Joey loves arts and crafts, so Tommy and I decided we’d plan a fun art project, and we got the idea to do apple stencils from pinterest.  The boys told me how they wanted their “pumpkin faces” to look, and I carved accordingly.  Since we didn’t have orange paint, we had to experiment with how much yellow and red to mix together for the desired shade of orange.  Joey had stamped out four pages worth of pumpkins before I got my camera; Tommy was slower and more methodical, and he liked seeing how many times he could stamp it without re-wetting his apple.  We’ll definitely have to make this a fall craft tradition!

Fall Harvest Stir-Fry

Stir-fry is so easy that I’ve never bothered posting a recipe, but this week’s version ended up fun and seasonal-looking.  I usually use chicken, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, and fresh or frozen broccoli, but this time I went for a clean-the-fridge approach with our plethora of aging peppers (thank you, Sprouts, for 3/$1 bell peppers!).

Fall Harvest Stir-Fry

In a wok, heat a little oil and add:

2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite sized pieces

3 cloves garlic, minced

one yellow, one orange, and one red bell pepper, sliced

Add additional seasonings to taste (I add several splashes of soy sauce and one big shake of ginger powder).  Stir occasionally until chicken is cooked through.  Serve over rice.

Nothing New

I feel like my blog posts of late have been variations on a theme–Tommy is reading or riding bikes, Elizabeth is dancing, Susie is trying on other people’s shoes.  Here are scenes from the last couple of days.

Somebody fell asleep reading Winnie-the-Pooh…

Having “crashed” both real bikes and the baby scooter, Tommy turns to the trike for his speedy tricks…

Meanwhile, Susanna absconds with his slippers…

and Elizabeth does a ballet performance, taking advantage of the reflective properties of the sliding glass door to analyze her moves.

All About Shoes

I still don’t know where this obsession with shoes comes from, but Susanna is definitely following her sister’s lead with the shoe fetish.  On a given day, she’ll try on her own shoes, Tommy’s shoes, Lizzie’s crocs, my heels, and Daddy’s tennis shoes.

Walking in them successfully is another matter!

Ballet Class

Elizabeth’s ballet class was divided by age at the beginning of the school year, so for the past several weeks, it’s just been Elizabeth and three sisters in the 3-5 class.  Since the other family is out of town for a wedding, this week’s class was really a private lesson.  Susie is always wanting to go up and dance with the big girls, so this week we let her!  Have I mentioned how much Elizabeth loves ballet and Miss Molly?  I honestly think that watching my girls have so much fun dancing was the best hour of my week.
