In Mommy’s Shoes

In the past couple of weeks, Elizabeth has discovered the joys of trying on Mommy’s shoes.  And as Susanna does everything her sister does, she tries them on, too (though usually she needs some help actually getting them on her feet).  I keep all of our shoes except Derek’s work shoes in our front closet, and nowadays I find the girls wearing mine as often as not.  They leave them around the house and try to dance in them and pretend to be me.  Honestly, and my mom confirms this, I was never one to play dress-up with Mommy’s clothes and shoes, so I’m a bit taken aback every time I turn around and see my red heels on my three year old.  Fortunately, I only have four pairs of dress shoes, so the mess is fairly easy to deal with at night!

This morning, I sat down and looked through Tommy’s most recently completed notebook of drawings.  I saw things to disturb and amuse me…

This is a Cars representation of the crucifixion/communion.  The small arrows are pointing to “my blood that is poured out for you/the cup being poured” and “my body that is broken for you/the bread being broken.”  We have had to talk to Tommy in the past about the fact that Lightning McQueen is not Jesus.  I actually forbade him to draw any more Cars Bible stories, because I felt like it was a little sacrilegious.  I don’t know when he did this drawing–it could have been before my prohibition.  Now I need Derek to come home from his trip and sit down with Tommy to explain why we let them watch Veggie Tales but don’t want them drawing Cars Bible Tales.  Or maybe to tell me I’m overreacting.

These are all aircraft inspired by a Things That Fly book at Grandma’s house.  Note the bombs.

See, now I’m suddenly not as comfortable with Veggie Tales!

After 13 weeks, we can let out the secret! There aren’t just five of us anymore!

Susie’s getting some practice in on being a big sister–she’s glad she finally has someone smaller to sit on her lap!

The girls and I saw a healthy baby on the ultrasound today (Tommy, to his chagrin, missed the whole thing while using the bathroom).   Elizabeth cooed over the cute little head and hands; Susie waved and yelled, “Baby!”  Tommy cried over not getting to meet the baby, but he immediately cheered up when offered a chocolate chip cookie.  It’s making the intense nausea worth it to see how well Baby is growing!

I’m currently taking suggestions for witty comebacks to the inevitable “Are all FOUR of these kids YOURS?”  I’ve already considered (and discarded) “Yes, we’re trying to catch up with Brangelina,” “Four?  Last time I checked, there were just two,” and “No, we kidnapped the girls and are on the run from the police.”  Out here, three kids is unusual but still considered normal.  But four?!…  Well, we’re excited to join the “big family” ranks come spring!

Fall Soccer

Last night was Tommy’s first soccer class.  He’s just signed up for a little five-week program with our parks and rec department.  He was pretty excited, and Derek says he ran around a lot and had fun!

And on an unrelated note, I just love the look Susie is giving her big brother here!

too funny not to share

So today we had a little boy Tommy’s age over to play.  Our lunchtime conversation totally cracked me up, but I can’t put it on facebook because his mom is my facebook friend and would probably be mortified!

Him (sitting down for lunch): Don’t you ever sweep this place?

Me (handing out sandwiches): Yep, all the time.

Him (looking disgustedly under his chair): Well, who does the sweeping?

Me (trying to keep a straight face): Me.

Him: Well, maybe you need to get a new broom.

(That’s what I get for being a sub-par housekeeper–even six year olds notice the mess!  Though as I swept under the table after lunch, I cracked up that his place was by far the crumbiest!)

Wearing Mommy’s Dress

This morning, the girls insisted that Susie had to wear a dress that had been mine!  Still cute after 30 years…

At the Dentist’s Office

The big kids had their dentist’s appointments this morning, and we had some good news and bad news.  The good news is that Tommy, who bravely got x-rays, is doing great!  He’s brushing and flossing well, and he has no cavities.  Keep up the good work, Tommy!

The bad news is that Elizabeth’s thumb sucking habit is starting to cause more problems to her teeth and jaw.  We already knew that the front two teeth are being pushed out by the thumb, but her dentist noticed that she’s starting to have cross bite problems, too.  It’s too early to tell if it’s just genetic or something that might fix itself with time, but it’s definitely exacerbated by the thumb sucking, so we discussed the need to break this habit.  Especially when I mentioned that her little sister is starting to copy her and suck her thumb, too!  I’m so frustrated by this thumb saga–we’ve tried reward charts, big girl nail polish, Thum (with hot pepper in it), and constantly reminding her to stop.  Nothing is working.  Dr. Gellman had a serious talk with her about it, told me to have other teachers (Sunday School, ballet) tell her thumb sucking is not allowed in their class, and loaded me up with some new short-term bribes.  Elizabeth almost made it home without sucking her thumb, but I did catch her at it once, so she’s going to have to try again if she wants a new bouncy-ball.

This is SO frustrating!  Does anyone else have a trick that worked for your kid?

5:45

And Elizabeth was up at 5:45 this morning, crying because Daddy had left for Texas.  This is what I get for bragging about everyone sleeping in yesterday!

7:45

That’s how late the kids slept in this morning!  (Actually, that’s when Elizabeth got up, but the other two stayed down a few more minutes.)  It was amazing.

Then, of course, the girls danced.

And we listened to The Last Battle.

Feeding Sister

This morning, Elizabeth offered to feed Susie her oatmeal for me.  She actually didn’t do too bad–and I managed to eat my own breakfast in record time!
