"Daddy Home!"

daddyhome.jpgJust like we promised, Daddy came home from work in an airplane today!  (For two and a half days–yay!)  It was a good thing, too–when I went in to get him up from his nap, Tommy had taken his socks, pants, and diaper off and was in desperate need of clean sheets and a bath.  Good thing there was an able bodied adult here to bathe him since that is one task I am unable to do with my SI joint trouble.

Tommy has been telling me this past month that “Daddy wort hard” (Daddy works hard).  Tonight he kept exclaiming, “Daddy home!”

Four weeks down, three to go…

Why use a sippy…

…when Mommy’s cup is available?

The Big Picture Story Bible

big-picture-story-bible2.jpg I was going to let Derek do this post eventually since he is the spiritual head of our household, but when Christina blogged about Geneva’s children’s Bible and asked what the rest of us were using, I decided it was time for me to share (and maybe have him follow up later)!  First of all, let me say that I am amazed at how quickly Tommy recognized his first Bible (a board book one from the American Bible Society, decent for babies) as well as Mommy’s (a brown ESV) and Daddy’s (a red NASB).  He loved reading his Bible well before a year, and it quickly became the routine to have Bible reading time every night before bed–hopefully something we can keep up always.  While there’s nothing wrong with collections of Bible stories (like The Beginner’s Bible, which both Grandmas have on hand), we think that even young children are capable of learning that God’s Word is more than just a bunch of random stories.  With the goal of imparting God’s plan of redemption from Genesis to Revelation in terms that children can understand, one of the pastors from our church has written The Big Picture Story Bible.  We love it!  There are only 2o-some chapters, but we read one every night for family devotions.  We’re basically going through the Bible once a month, which is good for Tommy and us!  The same themes keep coming up throughout the stories–we worship a big God who has a good plan for His people and always keeps His promises.  When we graduate to using big words like redemption and grace, we think Tommy will already be familiar with the concepts.  I find the language very accessible for Tommy, he likes the illustrations, and I anticipate using it for some time to come.

Of course, we haven’t checked out every children’s Bible out there–what do the rest of you parents use with your kids?  And at what age have you/do you intend to make the shift from Bible story books to reading straight from the Bible in family devotions?

The Simpsons Visit Chicago!

simpson-visit-003.jpgWe have been blessed with so many visits from friends since moving to Chicago.  This weekend was a double feature, because a couple hours after my college roommate left for home, my college mentor arrived with her family!  Tommy and I had not gotten to see Uncle Dan and Auntie Lisa and their little family since he and Kate were pre-crawling and there was no baby Jane.  The three big kids played together beautifully, all four went to sleep eventually, and we parents indulged in several hours of gaming and deep conversations at night and in the morning.  I SO wish Derek could have been here to see me beat Dan Simpson in a game (a FIRST!) two times in a row (a once in a lifetime achievement).  Attica is now on my top tier of games.=)  And I wish Derek could have been teleconferencing while we discussed parenting, homeschooling, large families, books, missions, and all the other crazy kindred spirity things that naturally come up with the Simpsons.

simpson-visit-007.jpgSusan has always been dear to my heart–hearing her quote lines from her favorite movie (Pride and Prejudice, of course!) IN a British accent pretty much made my year.  What 3.5 year old goes around saying, “I’m very fond of walking!” and talks about Mr. Darcy?  Dan and Susan acted out a whole little P&P scene for my benefit.  Can you be kindred spirits with a preschooler?  I also think I have Susan to thank for Tommy’s renewed interest in the potty chair this evening (after four successes in two days, he completely lost interest for about two weeks in there).  If someone as cool as Susan can use the big boy potty, Tommy wants to, too!

simpson-visit-011.jpgI make no secret about my future hopes for Kate and Tommy (with the realization that there are about four other quality 1-3 year olds who I would highly approve of as daughters-in-law, too, so I’m not totally limiting his options).  I loved how affectionate these two were all morning.  And it was so fun to see what a spunky little girl Kate has become!  In true Simpson fashion, she can rattle off several Bible verses, hymns, and songs based on the Westminster Catechism. Tommy was too shy to show off his first third of the Greek alphabet (his only claim to Biblical scholarship thusfar). Oh well. Girls are more verbal than boys, anyway…

simpson-visit-013.jpgSweet little Jane seemed to be wondering why there wasn’t anyone her size around, but I promised her a playmate when we see them this summer!

mariel-visit-001.jpgMariel is in town this weekend to hang out with Hannah and me, and we sat down this morning to knock out her invitations.  Assembly line method is SO much faster than sitting in one’s own bedroom, stealing 15 minutes at a time to do a bit here and a bit there.  Why, wedding planning can actually be fun when you’re sitting around doing it with your girlfriends!  Who knew?!  Anyway, don’t we look productive?  (And to the couple-who-shall-remain-nameless getting married a week after my roomie…now that I’m not in town to bug you anymore, take this as a gentle nudge towards getting your invites together, too!)

Tommy's Two Year Stats

Height: 35 inches (80th percentile)

Weight: 33 lbs. 6 oz. (95th percentile) –less than we thought!

Head: 50 cm (75th percentile)

Tommy watched with interest as the nurse pricked his thumb and proceeded to take two separate blood samples out.  Mommy fought the urge to gag and tried not to look.  (For the record, he doesn’t have lead poisoning.)  No temper tantrums–I planned ahead today and took him there 45 minutes early so he could play with the cars and trucks in the waiting room for a good long time before seeing the doctor, and that plan really seemed to work well.  He also earned a matchbox car for being good during his appointment (they have a treasure chest reminiscent of my childhood dentist), so he happily left the office with a new car in hand.  Praise God for a healthy two year checkup!

Back Already

Well, it took us 8.5 hours instead of 7, but we’re back in our house in Chicago.  The past two days were so full of fun Columbia time that I didn’t really get online much, but here’s what Tommy spent hours every day doing, with Ba-Pa, Ga-Ma, or “Untle” Peter…going “beep beep” in Ba-Pa’s “Tar”:

Tommy’s Photo Shoot

couch.jpgSince Daddy hasn’t gotten a chance to see the pics from Tommy’s photo shoot, here is a picture of the picture from Saturday…totally non-posed!  Doesn’t he look like a skeezix?

Columbia Notebook, Day Two

Yesterday afternoon Katie got to come over and help my mom and I shop for fabric for the mother-of-the-groom dress, then I headed over to Shepherdsfield for a girls’ night with some of my girlfriends there.  Katie and I took our traditional picture (we have Em-and-Katie shots going back 15 years…), and I got a foot massage and all the scoop on Cate’s new beau.  Yay for falling in love in your 30’s!

This morning I decided Tommy was going to get a haircut, no matter what.  He refused to let the scissors near him, but he liked that the clippers went “vroom vroom” like a car, so we just put a #6 attachment on the razor and clipped him up like Uncle John.  I think he looks MUCH better and much more like a little boy!

I also dragged Peter and Cammy to JC Penney’s to start their registry!  An hour and a half was enough to do us all in, even though they’d brought snacks to sustain them.  They still have to find dishes and pans, but I think we made some headway…

Tonight we’re going to try to get started on Tommy’s spaceship quilt.  Wish us luck!

Columbia Notebook, Day One

Sunday found us enjoying the familiarity of E Free, the comfort of Grandma and Grandpa’s house, and some quality time with Peter and Cammy (who are going to register this week if I have to drag them through the housewares section of Macys myself!).  My big treat was an afternoon concert–The Academy of St Martin in the Fields with Julia Fischer came to the newly remodeled Missouri Theatre, and I got to go with my parents!  They were on a 10-city tour of the US (can you believe they came here?!), and we hadn’t gotten to hear them since their last concert in Columbia when I was 15 or 16.  Good music is amazing, and Julia Fischer is incredible.  She’s younger than me, but they’re already calling her the greatest violinist of her generation.  Yes, Mariel and Hannah, you would have loved it!Tommy’s obviously decided that 5:30 am is a good time to wake up here.  And that’s all for today!
