Today our community group met up after church for a picnic at the park. The boys went off with one of the dads to play football, and the girl herd wandered about, eating and talking nonstop.
I have so many little matters to tell you of, that I cannot wait any longer before I begin to put them down.

[We’re talking about where people live when they grow up and get married.]
Elizabeth: When I get married, I’m going to live really close to Mommy and Daddy, because it would be so sad to be far away!
Susanna: When I get married, I’m going to live far away from you. [ dramatic pause] I’m going to live next to the grandma who has the cats.

We started the day at the Reagan Library, of course. It was our fifth year in a row, so we knew exactly what to do. Got there early enough to park in the lot, went straight for the crafts, then wandered around the games, reenactors, and face painting.
Then in the afternoon, we had a neighborhood celebration down at Baxter Park. Watermelon eating contest, water balloon games, dessert potluck, and a perfect view of the Malibu fireworks over the ocean…
Janie didn’t participate in the watermelon eating contest, but she still wanted me to take a picture of her eating watermelon. Silly little Bug.

The kids love playing in the sand, and I just need to do more of it. When James and Ellis came over last week, they all had a blast digging in the neighbor’s sandbox.
And on Saturday, we managed to get down to Zuma Beach for the morning before the crowds and heat made it unpleasant!
The kids were big fans of the sand cliffs made by the tide. They spent forever just jumping all over them.

It was free homeschool day at the LA Natural History Museum, so we drove into town again for another summer field trip. I have to admit, natural history museums leave me pretty cold. We’d just been to the zoo, so we’d just seen all these animals alive a week previously. And Janie had a first-class temper tantrum in the foyer of the museum because our stroller is broken, the umbrella stroller is just too short for comfort, and I wanted to try a field trip with just a backpack and our feet. Apparently Bug hates walking and can’t walk and I am the worst Mommy in the world because I want her to walk. I tried to sit back and think that I was just doing my bit to make all the other moms in the museum that day feel better about themselves. All in all, the kids had an okay time. We were supposed to meet another homeschool family, but they came an hour and a half late, so it was mostly me and the kids, which Tommy found boring. They all really loved the gem rooms at least! And I let them have popsicles on the way out because the guy was smartly standing right in front of the entrance, ready to revive kids with sugar and artificial colors for $2 apiece. Next time we go to a natural history museum, it will be in Santa Barbara, where it’s small and familiar and has the delightful back creek area where everyone can get muddy and wet.

It’s been awhile since we had a zoo membership, but Sunde and I agreed to get one this year and go together at least a couple times. The big girls rode with Amanda Mae, and Ross rode in our car. I think this is the first time Janie has been at a zoo since noticing anything other than the grass. She was a big fan!
