Janie’s 9th Birthday Party

Janie finally got to have a party this year, and she just so happened to know nine girls to invite! She asked for a Mysterious Benedict Society theme, which kinda stumped me since only three of the guests were familiar with the series. We decided to go for a generally bookish, clever children theme.

Shout out to our inspiration material!
We started with a rousing game of Bring Your Own Book, one of our favorite party games. It says 12+, but our 8 year old guests did just fine with a little help from me.
All the girls very quickly caught on to finding silly or perfect lines from their books to match the theme on the card. As one of them said, “Oh! It’s like Apples to Apples with books!”
Then we played Children’s Book Titles charades, pitting sister groups against each other. The Muller-Feller-Nuxoll team narrowly best out the Ford-McDonald sisters!
The our clever girls ran around the house doing a scavenger hunt to find their cupcakes.
Janie baked the cupcakes herself–from scratch, not a mix!
She was quite enthusiastic about the presents.
They ended the party with dress-up time, which I think The Mysterious Benedict Society kids would approve of!

Tommy at 15

Tommy and I did double duty with appointments today. This morning, we saw his new orthodontist for a consult on getting him his second series of braces. (Actually, because he has some missing adult teeth, a small jaw, and a mild overbite, she said, “I’m going to have to study hard to figure out the best way to address all this,” which is always a bit disconcerting!)

Then in the afternoon, he got his 15 year check-up. He is 5′ 9 1/2″ and has a 50% BMI, so a very chill, uneventful visit. Kindof fits with his chill, undramatic personality.

Christmas Concert 2021

All three girls played in the Mid-Prairie Homeschool Assistance Program Christmas Concert! Between the band, orchestras, and choirs, about 150 kids participated. It was Janie’s first-ever public performance, and she did great! Grandma Willett even got to drive up to see it!

Elizabeth is the top cellist in Intermediate Orchestra.
Janie’s beginning viola class consists of her and FOUR boys, all of whom are sweet (and also all have new baby siblings, making our family of five kids the lower end of the family size spectrum!)
Susie sits right next to Carl, the concertmaster of Intermediate Orchestra.
Intermediate Orchestra played “Medieval Carol” on their own and then moved back to join the advanced orchestra for a few other pieces. (In the video, note that Susie had the wrong music out and realized at the last minute that she needed to switch it!)

Janie’s beginning viola class joined the whole combined orchestra for “Joy to the World,” which was an audience sing-along!

And afterwards, Janie had to grab a picture with Ceci, one of her new soccer/beginning orchestra buddies!

Halloween 2021

Trick or treating happened again! Our new friends who moved here from Australia, the Hedts, invited us, the Shroeders, and Lashmits over to help them celebrate their first American Halloween. Our kids, of course, went as children’s book characters. Presenting the Mysterious Benedict Society!

Milligan, the world’s best amnesiac secret agent dad, ready to protect and serve:

Number Two, clad in her trademark yellow, surrogate mothering our band of genius child spies:

The Great Kate Weatherall, with red bucket filled with useful items like a swiss army knife, slingshot, twine, and other things you just might need to get yourself out of a jam:

The highly precocious Constance Contraire, with her contraband pencils, reminding us that “rules and schools are tools for fools!”:

Kate’s pet peregrine falcon, Madge:

And the whole gang at Imani, Quinn and Mieka’s:

Lizzie’s swim team bestie, Holly, joined us for the evening, since she lives out in the country:

And sweet Imani carried Annie most of the way between the houses.

It felt so great to be back to normal life!

Annie had her first day of preschool at Shimek Elementary School today. Daddy dropped her off, and our sweet babysitter Jordan picked her up. When asked about what friends she played with, she said, “Mrs. Cavanagh and Miss Lala.” So she made friends with her teacher and her para. Hopefully tomorrow she’ll play with another four year old…

First Week of School 2021

Since we were all in quarantine, we decided that our “soft start” to school this week would actually be a real start to school. We did sleep in an extra hour because Tommy was still tired at the beginning of the week, and I had to homeschool briefly from the couch Wed morning before retreating to my bedroom for the rest of the day with body aches as bad as I had after my second vaccine shot this spring, but otherwise, it was a pretty good start to the year, considering all six of us had just tested positive for covid the week before. (For those wondering, Derek didn’t get it, I have mostly had bad cold symptoms for ten days besides that one bad day, Tommy had one high fever and a few days of fatigue, big girls had one day of headaches and fatigue, and Annie was basically asymptomatic.)

This year, we’re pulling back to a much more home-based homeschool. No more driving to Amish country four times a week for stupid classes that are mostly internet-based busywork! Tommy is taking some online classes and tutorials (Algebra II, Latin, Great Books, Biology), doing independent studies with Grandpa (programming) and Dad (theology), participating in a homeschool PE class with all his friends that my friend Jill is leading, and just doing history with me. Elizabeth is taking one online writing class and everything else with me. Susie and Janie are all with me. Annie will be trying out public school preschool to take advantage of their alleged special ed services (though they managed to lose her IEP that we worked so hard on last winter, so she’ll be starting the year as a regular preschool student and getting re-evaluated, so while I have no doubt that she’ll qualify as special ed, I have low expectations as to any benefits or assistance she’ll actually receive), so we’ll even have two and a half dedicated hours every morning to hit the books hard without any little Pub distractions! And now that she has the Delta variant antibodies nice and fresh in her little body, I’m the least freaked out public school mom in Iowa City heading into the school year.

We’re not changing up too much, otherwise–the girls are all doing the same tried-and-true classical core subjects that worked with older siblings, and for our history and science cycles, we’re repeating Middle Ages/Renaissance history and botany (which we studied last time we lived in Iowa!), only with a more Charlotte Mason-inspired twist. I’m scheduling in scientific living book read-alouds every M-Th and nature hikes every Friday. After feeling like we lost our family culture when everyone was going every which way last year, we’re reinstating family morning time. I’m planning to make a big breakfast every morning, have Derek lead devotions before he takes Annie to school, then have all the big kids and me do our hymn sing, Bible memory, and poetry recitation work together before Tommy turns to his classes. Then the girls and I will do our history and science read-alouds before breaking into individual subjects. Tommy will be back to piano (after a two year hiatus!) with Miss Molly, our piano teacher from before, Elizabeth will continue with Suzuki cello with Dr G, Susie will continue with Suzuki violin with Miss Cande, they’ll both do orchestra at our homeschool assistance program in Kalona, and Janie will be starting Suzuki viola group classes in Kalona and hopefully with a private teacher friend of Dr. G’s, as well. Oh, and I’m trying to get Annie into music therapy, because she’s far and away the most gifted musician of the lot and is the only one who willingly practices without complaining. How will I have time to practice with five children every day? I’m as interested to figure out that answer as you are.

The zoo in Des Moines had a special event on Sunday for families of special needs kids. So the kids and I drove over for Annie’s first trip to a zoo that she actually remembers. Everything was free–from sack lunches to giraffe feeding to all the rides!–and it felt great being back in a public place with lots of people. We even met a family from church and another family from our Irish Dance studio!

Is this double wattled weird bird a creature from a fantasy world or what??

Mackinac Island

The kids had never been to Mackinac, so we headed over early to Mackinaw City to tour Colonial Michilimackinac (the fort and fur trading village on the land side) before meeting the rest of the family on Mackinac Island for fudge, Fort Mackinac, and the Grand Hotel.

No picture of the ice cream we ate at the Grand Hotel, just Pub enjoying the cone…
Lilacs were in bloom all over the island!

To celebrate Grandpa’s retirement, the whole Muller Fam hung out together at a lake house in Charlevoix this week. It was our first real Up North vacation with the kids, and everyone had a great time!

End of the School Year

2020-2021 was our hardest school year ever, but we persevered to the end.
