Bidding our sorrows cease

Jesus! the Name that charms our fears and bids our sorrows cease;
‘Tis music in the sinner’s ears, ’tis life and health and peace.

We’ve been trying to learn a new hymn every few weeks. Several weeks ago, we introduced the kids to Charles Wesley’s O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing. At one point, Tommy asked, “What is bid sorrows cease?” I explained, “Sorrows are our sadness or things that make us sad. And Jesus is the one who can bid our sorrows cease, which means that he can make our sadness go away.”

The other night, Tommy was having a rough go of things. He was recovering from his sickness, overtired, perhaps underfed, and not at all in a mood to obey. After some struggling, he finally joined us in Lizzie’s room for family worship, where we sang O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing. Tommy didn’t join us, sulking. But at the end of the song, he asked, “Can Jesus please bid our sorrows cease?” So we took time to pray with him to help Tommy’s sadness to go away.

It was a wonderful moment, and one that encouraged us that the theology of great hymns can really shape a child’s heart!
