Backyard!

Grandpa fixed the wagon last week, and the kids are glad to have it back in the backyard!

Fun With Grandpa

As usual, my dad fixed all sorts of things while he was here. The kids loved helping him fix the cracked chairs!

And they all had to help him play oboe…

Traditional playing on the tummy picture…

Tommy actually played without biting the reed this time!

Oh, the joys of trying to get three children to look one direction…

Aquarium

Welcome to our new website! I’m still catching up from last week’s pictures, so I’ll schedule posts for every day this week.

Melissa had given my extra tickets for the Long Beach Aquarium, so we headed down there last Monday. It was a great final excursion with Grandma and Grandpa.  They got Tommy to pet all sorts of sea creature like jellyfish, manta rays, and baby sharks!

Grandma and a lorikeet.

Even Susanna loved looking at the pretty fishes!

And when we got home, Tommy read One Fish, Two Fish to us before bed!

A new blog home

The blog domain expired, and as Em isn’t doing so much in the way of tutorials anymore, and as our prior service provider was less than ideal, it seemed a good time to change. All the archives should be here. There may be small functionality issues as we tweak the new WordPress build, widgets, and settings, but we hope to iron those out soon.

Balboa Park and Skating

Part of our time in San Diego was spent at beautiful Balboa Park. We’ll go back there for sure!

It was so great to see Helen again for the first time since she lived with my parents!

And on a whim, I asked my mom to bring her skates so we could take the kids skating.  I seriously had not been on the ice since I was pregnant with Elizabeth, and I had to be careful since it was the day before my race.  The hardest thing I tried was a salchow.  Tommy did really well…after I showed him how to fall the right way.  Elizabeth fell immediately upon entering the rink and was inconsolable until we gave in and took off her skates.  Then she hung out with Grandpa and Susanna, cheering on Tommy’s progress.  I think it was actually really good for Tommy to be braver than his fearless sister at something for once!

For my mom’s birthday on Thursday, we met up with Helen and headed into San Diego. For lunch, we had high tea at Shakespeare’s Corner Shoppe tea room. It was delicious!

Showing off her matching tea cup t-shirt…

The kids had their own trays; the adults shared the three-tiered tray.

I want to go back there to celebrate my birthday!

OC and San Diego, Day One

Finally getting around to posting pictures from last week’s adventures in Orange County and San Diego.

My 5K Results

I know that there’s an inverse relationship between physical fitness and how much you brag online about your physical exertion.  But I got my results this afternoon, and I’m pretty excited!  So I’m not putting this on facebook or anything, but I’m going to stick this info on here so I’ll have it to refer to if/when there is a next race.

My time was 29:24 (Made my goal of under half an hour!).
I was 406/1405 overall, 139/793 women, 19/74 women ages 25-29.
*Note that there was also a 10K and half marathon that morning, so I’m sure all of the really fit people were doing those events rather than mine!

Edit–I used this Couch to 5K running plan in general and especially recommend the NHS C25K podcasts in particular.

My First 5K!

I’ve finally completed one of my resolutions!  This morning, I ran my first 5K race.  I hadn’t run since gym class in high school, but I faithfully followed the Couch to 5K training plan all winter, and I managed to run today’s whole race without walking at all.  I can definitely say that if I can run a 5K, anyone can.  And my parents were here to see it!  I actually still hate running and plan to change back to walking workouts…but it’s such good exercise that I’m considering whether to sign up for another one just to keep me running.  (Alternately, Lisa suggested setting a hiking goal for the fall.  That sounds a lot more fun.  We’ll see!)

Why Do We Live North of LA?

Busy Week!  On Wednesday, we drove down to Aliso Viejo to pick my mom up from Lisa’s, then headed down to San Diego to see Helen and Anna for a couple days. I knew that Orange County was nice, but I just haven’t ventured down there much. Wow, it’s lovely!  Why do we live up here and not down there?  (Oh yeah, the traffic.)  And San Diego warrants its own series of posts…I’m a big fan.  I’ll get my pictures downloaded over the weekend, but here’s one that Lisa sent me from our picnic lunch with her!
