Way Fruit Farm!
Sep 23rd, 2010 by ECM
Can I just say that it’s great to be out and about again? And that Target sells Kleenex with Lotion in 10-packs now. Just in case you needed to know.
This morning we met friends at Way Fruit Farm to pick up some fall goodies. Tommy was so excited to see real tractors and play in a pretend one, all the kids loved the corn box (SO much better than sand), and we got a lot of yummy apples (and some cider doughnuts). Applesauce and apple crisp, coming up!
This is what we’ve been doing for the past week…

Staying in our PJ’s all day, reading. Except today we all got dressed and went to Bible study, where I managed to last two hours without blowing my nose. Poor Derek has it the worst now. My laundry basket is full of handkerchiefs.
So I’m awake enough to try to remember what exactly we’ve been reading lately.
Tommy’s doing a lot of Tintin (SO fun to read French with a stuffy nose) and Tasha Tudor (especially obsessed with Corgiville Fair). Elizabeth’s on a Richard Scarrey kick, especially The Polite Elephant (which she’s reading above), and has just discovered Ezra Jack Keats (especially The Snowy Day, because she has some of those pictures framed in her room).
I started being sick by rereading the Anne books and Shirley Jackson’s family memoirs (which always make me glad I’m a housewife in the 10’s, not the 50’s) then was inspired by Elizabeth’s fascination with the cover of The Silmarillion (?!) to do a re-read of The Hobbit and LOTR, after which I tried to start The Silmarillion and remembered why I always get too bored to finish. I then got to the library over the weekend and picked up a good bit of light reading–some Georgette Heyer regency romances (she’s a new discovery–Cousin Kate had flickers of Northanger Abbey and Jane Eyre, which was fun, but she seems to be uneven from book to book). She also wrote a murder mystery praised by Dorothy Sayers–Death in the Stocks, which was very much in the Sayers/Tey/Allingham vein and quite enjoyable. That reminded me to look Sayers up again, and I blasted through about six Lord Peters up through last night. I think Derek thinks I’m enjoying them too much to really be sick anymore, but I assure you, if I were feeling well, I’d be cleaning the bathroom.
This afternoon, the agenda leaves no time for reading–I need to get out to Walmart and buy more kleenex, as we’ve gone through five boxes in the past week. And maybe some more vitamin C.

And that’s really all we have the energy to say…
Anyone want to guess which Pixar movie we watched this week in the height of illness?
Yes, this is Tommy as Linguini from Ratatouille. In preparation for the toy kitchen they’re going to get for Christmas this year, we thought we’d show the kids a cooking-themed movie. Play cooking is really big around here now. When you don’t have a real chef’s hat, a lampshade does the trick. And when you don’t have a pet rat, your little sister makes a decent substitute “Little Chef.”
Okay, so maybe I’m a bit delirious with my head cold, allowing this to go on all morning…

A Timely Reminder
Sep 15th, 2010 by ECM
Today I made it to our church’s women’s Bible study. The topic this fall is the Psalms of Ascent. Anyone else need to be reminded of this?
I lift up my eyes to the hills–where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip–He who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The LORD watches over you–the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.
The LORD will keep you from all harm–He will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.
(Psalm 121)

Sixteen Months Old

I can’t believe how fast our little girl is growing up. She’s very girlie in her need to accessorize (shoes and hat at all times, thank you very much!), but she can make engine sounds right along with her brother, and she loves cars and duplos. She really loves pointing to children and animals in board books. She’s starting to use more words–mama, dada, bubba (brother), ba-bee (baby, herself), puppee (puppy, cat, bunny, any small animal), booberree (grapes, which she thinks are blueberries), shoe, oh-lee (holy), and probably a few more I’m not thinking of. She’ll frantically sign “more” or “please” if I’m not feeding her fast enough. We’re working on “thank you” and “all done” (but they’re not solid yet). She’s game for pretty much any food, including lettuce (?!), and she likes to feed herself with a fork or spoon. She’s pretty good at getting things into her mouth! Her favorite food is probably spaghetti (she had 7ths the other night). She wants to do everything that Tommy is doing, and she’ll follow him around the house or the yard. Tommy was much more able to entertain himself quietly with books and toys; Elizabeth is so much more social, and she always wants to be with people, preferably sitting on a lap. She is fascinated by babies and pretty friendly to anyone. She’s braver than Tommy was on the playground at this age–she swings and slides along with the big kids. She’s mostly down to one nap (with that morning nap coming back maybe a couple times a week), so she’s generally sleeping 1-3 and 7 pm-7 am. She’s close to outgrowing her size M Fuzzi Bunz and going up to the Large setting on her one-size diapers. (She’s also ready to move up to size 4 disposables, as soon as I get out to the store to get some more.) Her tummy is abnormally large, and it’s going to push her into 18-24 month clothes any day now. Although Elizabeth has never been a snuggler, she does like to nestle into you, turn to face outwards, and suck her right thumb and twirl her hair with her other hand. We call it “assuming the position.” Never a dull moment with this little girl around!
