Bidding our sorrows cease

Jesus! the Name that charms our fears and bids our sorrows cease;
‘Tis music in the sinner’s ears, ’tis life and health and peace.

We’ve been trying to learn a new hymn every few weeks. Several weeks ago, we introduced the kids to Charles Wesley’s O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing. At one point, Tommy asked, “What is bid sorrows cease?” I explained, “Sorrows are our sadness or things that make us sad. And Jesus is the one who can bid our sorrows cease, which means that he can make our sadness go away.”

The other night, Tommy was having a rough go of things. He was recovering from his sickness, overtired, perhaps underfed, and not at all in a mood to obey. After some struggling, he finally joined us in Lizzie’s room for family worship, where we sang O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing. Tommy didn’t join us, sulking. But at the end of the song, he asked, “Can Jesus please bid our sorrows cease?” So we took time to pray with him to help Tommy’s sadness to go away.

It was a wonderful moment, and one that encouraged us that the theology of great hymns can really shape a child’s heart!

Fall consignment shopping

I thought Chicago would be my last chance to consignment shop for awhile, but then a friend from church mentioned that there were two big consignment sales in State College and Bellefonte this weekend!  Since Tommy’s 4T winter wardrobe consisted of 4 pairs of pants, three shirts, snowpants, and a suit, I decided to check out the local deals!

First of all, since Elizabeth started walking, we’ve been getting away with random footwear.  I picked up some size 4 shoes at Walmart a few weeks ago, but I think she’s really a 4 1/2.  Try finding that size at Walmart or Target!  So I was on a mission to find her shoes and socks (she has hand-me-down clothes through 4T from friends, so I didn’t even let myself look at the girls’ clothes racks.)=)  Since she has a well-documented shoe fetish, she was delighted when I returned with not one, but four pairs of shoes–4 1/2, 5, 5 snow boots, and 5 1/2 (she has hand-me-down 6 through 7 1/2).  And a bag of socks with 16 complete sets and about 9 loners.  Total cost?  $8.25 (One of the $1.50 pairs of Stride Rites still had the $46 price tag inside.  It made me happy.)  (She’s already wearing one pair of shoes in the picture, and the hat was sent by Grandma Willett yesterday.  Both have been on all morning.)

Tommy really needs some 10 1/2 shoes, snow boots, and new socks, but I quickly realized that boys wear out shoes and socks much worse than girls, so I’m just going to have to take a deep breath and buy them new.  The first sale was disappointing–clothes priced $2-$8–and I refuse to pay over $1 for used clothing unless I’m desperate.  I did pick up a white dress shirt with tags for $2 (because he needs one for his suit) and a $5 Land’s End winter coat.  Red, of course, like a certain Pixar automobile.  I’ll pay $5 for a winter coat, though I have paid as little as $1.50 in the past.  A little depressed, I headed to the Bellefonte sale, which was in its second day where everything was half price.  Surprisingly, there was still a good selection, and clothes were priced between $1-3 to begin with, so I did much better there.   I ended up coming home with a linen suit coat and tie for Hannah’s wedding in case I can’t find a dark ringbearer suit this spring, the coat, a pullover, 6 shirts, 6 pairs of pants, and a pair of fuzzy footed pajamas (Tommy’s special request) for a total of $20

Then I called my mom on the way home and heard that one of her friends was congratulating herself on only spending $400 for school clothes for her two kids.  I felt smug.  When I arrived home, Tommy was ecstatic to see his “new clothes”–he literally jumped up and down as I pulled each new piece out of the bag, especially the suitcoat for “helping Hannah get married next summer.”  Yep, it was a pretty good start to the weekend in the Muller house!

Holy, holy, holy

While Tommy turned into a TV zombie this week, Elizabeth and I enjoyed some mommy-daughter time.  Her newest thing is to go around singing “Holy, Holy, Holy” except that it sounds like “Oh-lee, oh-lee, oh-lee!”  I just love the way she accentuates her “ohs”…

Yes, they're watching TV

Poor Tom-Tom.  He’s not been well this week.  His total food intake for the past two days is two bowls of applesauce, a piece of bread, four slices of watermelon, and a couple bites of a hamburger.  His fever hovers between 99 and 101.3.  Overnight, he’s delirious whenever the Tylenol wears off every 4 hours, and during the day, he’s lethargic and cranky.  I try to read to the kids, but Elizabeth’s into the stage where she wants to point to everything, and Tommy just wants to hear the story, so we have two very different listening styles going on right now.  So I gave in yesterday afternoon and let Tommy watch the entire Cars movie.  And will continue to let him watch long stretches of TV until he recovers.

Notice Elizabeth is sitting and signing “please,” as in “please may I eat some more bread on the couch?”

Uncle John Again!

John came, he played, he read the kids books.  And got exposed to a super-yucky virus that Tommy came down with after he arrived–we’re praying Uncle John’s Marine Corps strength will fight off the fever and cough.  The rest of us, however, are probably goners…

First Day of School!

Yesterday was Susannah and Ellie’s official first day of school, so even though we’d been doing a bit here and there, we decided it would be our official first day, too.  After doing school in the morning, we celebrated with a picnic lunch at Spring Creek Park!  (I was the delinquent mom and didn’t bring what I was supposed to, but Jenny made really cute cupcakes with all the kids’ initials for their first day.  I wish I were that cool!)  On Friday, all three of the big kids had made posters for their official first day pictures (again, this was Jenny’s idea and execution), and here they are!  This is definitely a tradition I want to keep up over the years.

Eight Teeth!

This weekend, Elizabeth cut through her 8th tooth.   Wowsers, was it hard work!  We were up in the middle of the night with screaming two or three nights in a row (the nights that Tommy slept through, of course), and now that it’s all through, Tommy spent last night getting up twice and wetting the bed.  We just can’t win.

This Little One really doesn’t like to show her teeth when I need her to, so instead, here’s what she can be found doing on laundry day:

When Derek went down again to put down some traps, he saw that our guests are actually bigger rodents than we initially thought–he thinks a squirrel and possibly a chipmunk or something else ratlike with a fuzzy tail.  Our traps are too flimsy–we have to wait for the pest control people, who won’t come until Tuesday (because of the holiday weekend–our landlord doesn’t think this warrants emergency service).  That was fun to tell the babysitters this afternoon…um, don’t worry if you hear squeaking and thumping downstairs.  It’s just the wild animals in our basement.

Now I’m hearing thumps all over the house and am convinced that we’re being invaded everywhere.  How am I supposed to sleep tonight?!  And tomorrow?  And Monday?

a mouse in the house

Well, actually, there are at least two.  I’ve been hearing them in the basement, but Derek actually saw them this morning.  Feeling a bit grossed out.  Hoping the mouse houses work.  And that Derek’s around to dispose of them if/when we catch them.  Yuck.

My Little Girl

Yesterday at Walmart, a little old lady asked how old my boys were.  Okay, so Elizabeth was wearing a blue Tigers cap, but seriously–she had on a skirt!  I guess I should always dress her in pink when we go out in public.  (A couple minutes later, another little old lady grumbled behind us loudly about it being a TWENTY items or less lane–as I placed our 15 items on the counter, I wanted to turn around and invite her to count the items in my cart, if she found them so fascinating, but I digress…)

My little GIRL and I had a fun little photo shoot after naps because I love the look of her in her little poofy skirt!
