By Himself

Well, this whole taking-a-break-from-potty-training thing has been working great!  This morning Tommy told us he wanted to use the potty, so he took off his pj’s and pull-up and used the potty.  Then he dumped it, rinsed it, washed his hands and brushed his teeth, put on a new pull-up, picked out new pants and put them on (backwards, but he doesn’t care), picked out a fleece, and put it on with just a tiny bit of help from me!  Now if we can just work on the crying-for-an-hour-when-the-babysitter-comes-over issue, we’ll be good!

Baby Pilates?

Derek has uploaded a bunch of youtube videos recently.  I’ve been trying to capture Elizabeth’s scoots, but all I seem to be able to get is her smile or these pilates-looking moves:

Taking a Break

So Derek and I decided yesterday to take a break from potty training.  Every time we do it, I feel like we really make progress and could make it if I stayed on top of things better, but the real problem is that Tommy can usually keep his training pants dry but is pooping erratically, so I can’t tell when I need to put him in a diaper.  I did teach him this past week how to scrape off/swish dirty training pants in the toilet and clean himself up so I just have to check him, so I am happy to say that I only have one child’s dirty diapers to worry about from now on.  Won’t they love in 15 years that I published this info to the world?!   So we’re taking a complete two-week break from potty training, and hopefully after hanging out with the Simpson and Talcott kids at the end of the month, Tommy will be ready to try again and GET it before his birthday!!!!

Maybe there is hope…after I typed the above, Tommy called to me that he wanted to use the potty and get an M&M…and he did!  I think this taking-a-break thing is working swimingly.=)

Clowning Around

Our humble subject’s response to this series?  Uproarious laughter and “That was silly of me!”

Cheerios, Cheerios!

Yesterday I decided that Elizabeth should try some cheerios.  I didn’t really remember when you’re supposed to start kids on finger foods, but Tommy’s baby book said he tried them at 8 months.  Oh, the delight!  She took 30 minutes playing with them before she realized that she could put them in her mouth.  Then a whole new world opened up to her.  By tonight, she was an old pro!

Yum!

I feel like I always am in a fog for about six months after having a baby.  Just as I came out of the fog, the holidays came.  While it’s wonderful to see friends and family, the past two months have been a nightmare in terms of schedule, sleeping, and routine.  We’re still recovering, but I’m starting to come out of the fog and get the kids and myself into a decent routine.  I actually typed up a daily schedule, and we’ve done pretty well with sticking to it this past week!  I am so happy when I’m on a schedule–it gives me freedom to play with my kids without feeling guilty about not doing housework and to do appropriate housework without feeling guilty about not playing with my kids.  Big helps–we’ve stayed in all week because of potty training (not even going out to do errands), and the kids are starting to sleep better again…at long last.   I’ve been reading an amazing book on keeping house (book review to come) that has me totally inspired to be a good homemaker!

So that some of you who keep me accountable on such things can know what to ask me about, here’s what I’m trying to do:

6-7       Feed Elizabeth, Quiet Time, get everyone dressed
7-9       Breakfast with Tommy, unload dishwasher, prepare for the day
9-11      Elizabeth naps, daily morning tasks
             M—Laundry and errands
             T—Clean bedrooms
             W—Clean kitchen
             Th—Laundry and menu planning
             F—Vacuum and dust
12-1  Lunch, read, kids down to nap (or quiet rest time)
1-2    Daily afternoon chore
        M—Sewing projects
        T—Clean bathrooms
        W—Class Prep
        Th—Clean downstairs (floors, windows, etc)
         F—Odd jobs
2-3    Personal Time
3-5    Play Time with the kids
5-6    Make Dinner
6-7    Pick up downstairs, dinner
7-8    Kids to bed, run dishwasher
8-10 Personal time (read seriously at least 15 minutes)

8 Months Old!

Wow!  Elizabeth is 8 months old!   Time flies when you’re having fun.  New developments this month include scooching across the floor, recognizing herself in the mirror (or on the computer), and making Mama, Dada, Baba sounds.  She’s becoming more resilient when attacked by Tommy, she can sit up indefinitely (unless toppled), and she loves interacting all day long!   When she wakes up in a good mood (like today), she’s happy for the day.   Still comfortably in 6-9 month clothes and medium sized cloth diapers (size 2 disposables), she’s stayed in the infant carseat much longer than Tommy did.  We’re looking forward to starting some finger foods in the coming month, and I might even trim her hair.  We love having our Little One around!

To pass the time, Tommy and I are taking another stab at learning the Apostle’s Creed.

Tonight, while sitting on the potty, he reviewed, though his theology is a bit unorthodox…”He was conceived by the Pontius Pilate…”

Potty Training, Again

This week is another hard-core go at potty training.  So far, little success.  Even with a 20-minute potty break timer, Tommy managed to poop in his training pants this morning (after two times yesterday and once on Sunday).  I’m making him clean it up because it is a long and disgusting process, and it really should make him want to do it on the potty.  So far, he spends 10 minutes cleaning things up, then I spend 15 minutes bathing him and cleaning his mess up (and changing all his clothes).  It’s not working as planned.  Elizabeth’s back to a semi-normal nap schedule today, so I’ll post updates if we have any breakthroughs.  Otherwise, picture me spending most of the day in the bathroom…pottychair 001

…We stay indoors, postpone 7 hour drives to pick up little dudes, and organize.   And then have a tea party before bed.
