Daddy will be pleased to know that Tommy’s still spending his afternoons at his favorite activity…
I have so many little matters to tell you of, that I cannot wait any longer before I begin to put them down.

Em and I have often discussed Tommy’s reading habits. He loves reading–we hope it’s part-hereditary, part-learned. (No, I’m not saying that he’s gifted. Do not misinterpret this post.) So what’s a day in Tommy’s library like? What books would he ask us to read him in a typical day? I decided to catalog Saturday as […]

I’ve noticed that girls are more willing to read boys’ books than otherwise. So here’s a list of mine with no help from Derek: Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I’m pretty sure you can’t grow up in America without reading these books, but just in case you were wondering….yes, every girl must read […]

Derek and I have been doing some reading aloud again, and we just love the great boys’ books out there. We can’t wait to share these favorites with Tommy in a few years: Homer Price by Robert McCloskey. Homer is one of those clever small-town boys who always has us in stitches. We don’t want Tommy […]

I’ve blogged a bit on children’s literature here, and it’s definitely one of my favorite topics of conversation with other moms/English majors/literature lovers. So tomorrow I’m condensing all of my thoughts over the past year into an online lecture for www.classicalhomeschooling.org, one of the groups I’m privileged to be a part of! The lecture is […]

I am so, so tired of The Happy Man and His Dump Truck and The Night Before Christmas. Tommy has latched onto those two books (and Cars and Trucks and Things That Go, which isn’t nearly as annoying) like nothing else. He’s actually shoving The Night Before Christmas on my lap as I type. Why did I think […]

Our recent discovery of the neighborhood library (just 8 blocks away, with loaning privileges from all the branches of the Chicago Public Library) resulted in several treasures. Tommy and I have gone to toddler story time (Tuesday mornings) and preschool storytime (Wednesday mornings, with a better children’s librarian), and, of course, we’ve checked out the children’s section. […]

So I’d finally taken pictures of Tommy’s almost-finished room (and posted them here) when our mail arrived with supplies for finishing it off! While visiting the Ciscos last month, Christina gave me the amazing idea of framing artwork for Tommy’s room. The more we thought about our favorite books, the more we realized that they […]

Moving up from the board books, here, in no particular order, are a few of our favorites for the next stage (picture books/starting to read on their own): A Bargain for Frances and all the Frances books by Russell and Lillian Hoban. Okay, so this is probably more of a girls’ series, but I love how […]
