Fairy Belle

Susie got two dress up outfits for her birthday, and while her tutu was in the wash, decided to wear both of them around together all day.  Because who wouldn’t want to dress up as Belle the Fairy?

I’d assumed that Susie would request a ballet theme for her birthday party this year–I’d bought a ton of ballerina party stuff last year, she’s even more obsessed this year, and she lives in a tutu.  But she insisted back in March that she wanted a “hook in the hand” party, which it took me several days to figure out meant pirates.  The girls would be princesses, of course, but she wanted a pirate themed party.  I was stumped.  Fortunately, I happened to mention my conundrum during a phone date with Naomi, who was doing creative, original party plans well before pinterest.  Knowing how much Susie loves Richard Scarry, Naomi immediately suggested I make the theme around his book Pie Rats, Ahoy!   I immediately bought the book and latched on to Naomi’s idea of mini pies for the guests.  I didn’t know how to tie in the princess theme other than telling Rebekah to come in a princess costume, but as usual, Sarah came to my rescue.  While picking up the big girl bike I’d hidden at their house last week, Sarah pulled out a box of leftover party supplies, including crowns, wands, and bubbles.  Craft, snack, take-home gift, all suddenly provided for me!  The girls decorated crowns and dressed up as princesses while Tommy and James played legos.  Then we made mini apple-blueberry pies for the kids to take home, had cake while I read Pie Rats, Ahoy! to them, and played a bit more.  It was a perfect four year old party!

Rebekah had to go before the pies were cool, and Janie and Ellis had to go down for naps, but James stayed long enough for a photo shoot with the finished products!

Susie at 4.

Muller Family-0013

Our little Susie Q is four years old.  She managed to get potty trained with just a week to spare before her birthday.  She decided four year olds don’t need diapers (except still at night), and that was that.  Hallelujah!  I asked Elizabeth to describe Susie, and she said: “She’s cute, she’s fond of dressing up, she’s doesn’t like to take naps very often [though when she does, she’ll sleep all afternoon], she loves her two new dresses that her grandmas got her for her birthday, she still sucks her thumb a lot and snuggles with her “stinky” pink blankie and Stinky Old Lionel [as opposed to to New Lionel, the lion I got to replace her mangled one–sadly, she rejected him because he doesn’t have a broken nose].  Only she is still cute, and she likes to tell me stories while I’m going potty [and really any time the two of them are together].”

Susannie has gotten fixated on sleeping on her old toddler mattress which had been stuck under the bunkbed.  Apparently Elizabeth and Janie took up too much of the double bed, so she moved to the floor, then the toddler mattress.  When Tommy moved into his own room yesterday and Elizabeth moved to the top bunk, Susie still wanted to sleep on her toddler mattress.  I put it on top of the double mattress in the bunk bed, and she’s happily “cozy” on that now.  Susie is frequently the last one awake and the first one up in the morning (though Janie is giving her a run for her money).  Usually as soon as Susie wakes up, she comes across the hall and climbs into bed with me to snuggle for a few minutes before taking on the day.  She is the only one of our children with whom I can comfortably snuggle in bed–all the other three are too restless!

Susanna is getting better at eating some meals, though breakfast is often a struggle.  We got her a 16 inch big girl bike for her birthday, but it’s still a bit big for her.  I think that means she must be a bit shorter than the older two at the same age, but we’ll find out next month when she and Elizabeth get their well-child checks.  Her temper tantrums have lessened some, and maybe it’s Elizabeth’s increasing moodiness or Janie’s increasing disobedience, but Susie no longer stands out as the strong-willed child.  She’s still irrational about things and cries daily, but she is more often sweet and helpful than out of control and bratty.  I was just thinking this week that I’m truly seeing the fruit of the hours upon hours of discipline and training that I’ve been investing in her since her terrible twos started at about 20 months old.  She’s starting to memorize little Bible verses and remembers the hymns we’re learning as a family.  She loves to say grace by singing the Johnny Appleseed song.  She sings and dances all day long, including a special song-and-dance performance of “Let it Go” at the dentist’s office last week for all of the appreciative dentists and hygienists.  Derek and I went to a church game night this weekend and had played a couple games with a familiar-looking guy when he mentioned he volunteered in the 3 year olds class.  “Oh, you have Susanna!” we exclaimed.  “You’re SUSIE’S parents?!” he said, as if that suddenly made us much more memorable.  Yep, I have a feeling we’re going to be known as SUSIE’S parents for a long time!

LA Festival of Books!

We finally went, because my parents were here, and we figured a 1:1 adult:child ratio would be good.  The kids recently got The Day the Crayons Quit from Derek’s Complex Litigation class when they came over for dinner, and we’ve been enjoying it ever since.  Imagine our excitement when we found out the author and illustrator were going to be reading the book at the festival!  They were hilarious–a great team, and great entertainers.

Before reading, they cracked up all the kids with a demonstration of how well they work together. Drew described things while Oliver drew totally different things. Note Tommy down front--the girls were right behind him.

Not only did they use great voices for all the crayons, but they gave us little behind-the-scenes details about the writing of the book. Oliver had real six year olds help him conceptualize the drawings. The green frog and tree his helpers drew him were so great that they made it into the finished book! You could see the wheels turning in Tommy's head at this point...

Just Girls Time

Last week, Tommy went to soccer camp from 9-12 every morning.  So we had “just girls” time all week, including the little girls’ first taste of Starbucks.  They are big fans of vanilla steamers!

Derek @ Work

Today I hauled the kids over to Malibu in the afternoon to take pictures of all of the Pepperdine law students who got clerkships.  Derek’s one of the clerkship advisers, and they couldn’t get the real college photographer to come up the hill to take pictures, so instead, they asked me.  And then I spent 45 minutes this evening editing the pictures, out of the goodness of my heart, because I am a kind, generous person–the type of person a Pepperdine professor who deserves tenure and a raise would marry.  The kind of person you would want to be living in subsidized on-campus housing, so she could share her kind spirit, amateur photography skills, and better-than-amateur baking skills with the students on a regular basis.  Ahem.

Anyway, while I was figuring out the lighting (nothing says first real photography gig like photographing 10 people in the brightest part of the afternoon!), I made Derek my model (nothing says act natural like standing around for 15 minutes being photographed while students and colleagues are passing by).  This is where the magic happens…

Easter Egg Hunting

We did our egg hunt in the afternoon this year because we had to leave too stinking early for church to do it in the morning.  And that way, Dave and Lan got to bring Nathan over to hunt for eggs, too!  He and Janie did remarkably well for their first egg hunt really understanding what was going on…

Family Gnocchi Making

I got the card reader working temporarily again!  I’ll get our Easter pictures up in a day or two, but here’s a quick picture of Sunday afternoon, Muller-style.  All six of us working together to make homemade gnocchi.  And even the little girls asked for seconds at dinnertime!

This week

Our card reader is not reading again, so pictures are going to have to keep waiting.  I.hate.this.computer.

And I’m sick of waiting for a working dishwasher.  Ours has been spewing water all over the kitchen floor for weeks, but by the time I called the repairman and got him out, I was super sick of the mess.  Then he ordered parts and after a 10 day wait, another guy came yesterday to install them, only to figure out we needed yet another part.  No dishwasher until he comes next Tuesday to install that.

Meanwhile, our sink went out over the weekend, and I had to inflict paper plates and plasticware on Matthew for his whole visit.  What’s the good of visiting your brother if your sister-in-law can’t cook you real meals on real dishes?  The cute nephew and nieces, I guess.  We did pull out Grandma’s fine china and the silver for Easter dinner–and Matthew spent an hour washing dishes after the company left!  Muller men are Quality Guys, no two ways about it.

The plumber fixed the sink after a brief four day wait, but I’m now expecting something else to go wrong with the dishwasher next week.  Add in the drought and our dying lawn, the broken sliding glass, screen, and garage doors (the last of which two separate companies have told our landlord to replace, but he resists because he installed it himself 20 years ago), I’m really ready for a break from house issues!  What’s next–puzzle pieces clogging the toilet?!

In other news, Janie is napping on the futon (not her crib), Susie is only having one accident a day, Elizabeth has totally regressed on her finger sucking, and Tommy is having a fun week at soccer camp.

That’s us this week!
